The Chateau Girardeau Sundays at Three series opens the 2019-2020 season with an exciting, toe-tapping program featuring the amazing talents of Southeast Missouri State Universitys Department of Music faculty.
A Soldier and the King will take place Aug. 25 at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus. The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall.
The program features Stravinskys Histoire du Soldat and Michael Daughertys Dead Elvis.
The Sundays at Three season opener will feature a wide range of our wind and percussion faculty, especially Dr. Jacqueline Wilson (assistant professor of music at Southeast) who will play the solo bassoon part onDead Elvis, said Dr. Gabrielle Baffoni, series director and assistant professor of single reeds at Southeast.
Histoire du Soldat is based on a Russian folk tale and relates the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. The music is scored for aseptetofviolin,double bass,clarinet,bassoon,cornet(often played ontrumpet),trombone, andpercussion, and features numerous beat changes.
Also featured is Dead Elvis, a 10-minute, single-movement work inspired by the King of Rock-n-Roll, Elvis Presley.
While the piece itself is not based on Elvis songs, fans may be able to catch a quote or two embedded in the piece, and will also enjoy a visual tribute to the King, Baffoni said.
