KRCU Public Radio at Southeast Missouri State University has added a travel show — “Travel with Rick Steves” — to its weekly lineup. With a lively mix of guest interviews and listener calls, this hour-long show goes beyond the Europe that Mr. Steves is famous for, with shows covering travel and cultures across every continent.

The author of 30 travel guidebooks and longtime host of the “Rick Steves’ Europe” television series, Steves was attracted to radio because of its ability to interact with listeners in ways that television cannot.

Host Rick Steves basks in the Norwegian sun above the Sognefjord in the Swiss Alps.

Steves says the radio waves provide a virtual caf for travelers to meet up and share tips, insights and discoveries.

“On my radio show, rather than being the tour guide, as I am on TV, I get to host the coming together of experts on various cultures and travel themes with our callers and listeners, Steves says. Serving as the conduit for all this exciting travel information comes with a downside — now I want to travel everywhere our radio show does.”

Starting July 7, you can tune into Travel with Rick Steves Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. on KRCU. Wait, Wait Dont Tell Me will replace Fresh Air Weekend at 5 p.m.

About Rick Steves:

Steves hiking in Italy’s Cinque Terre.

Steves took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. As an 18-year-old, he began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started his business, Rick Steves’ Europe, which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a staff of 100 full-time, well-traveled employees at its headquarters in Edmonds, Washington, near Seattle. There he produces a best-selling guidebook series on European travel, America’s most popular travel series on public television, a weekly hour-long National Public Radio show, a weekly syndicated column and free travel information available through his travel center and www.ricksteves.com. Rick Steves’ Europe also runs a successful European tour program organizing small-group tours that take more than 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. His mission: to empower Americans to take European trips that are fun, affordable and culturally broadening. When not on the road, Steves is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform and ending hunger. He lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington. His office window overlooks his old junior high school.
