Southeast Missouri State Universitys Dual Credit program has received initial accreditation from the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).The NACEP Accreditation Commission awarded the accreditation following a self-study documenting how the Universitys program adheres to NACEPs 17 standards. The accreditation is the result of a rigorous peer-review process conducted by a team of representatives from NACEP-accredited programs as well as the NACEP Accreditation Commission. NACEPs initial accreditation is valid for five years.Southeasts Dual Credit program offers 33 courses in 14 disciplines, including agriculture, biology, education, polytechnic studies, music, speech, history, geoscience, business, English, math, human environmental science, physics and chemistry. The courses are offered through agreements between local high schools and Southeast, and high school juniors or seniors enrolled in a college course can simultaneously earn both college and high school credit for the course.Southeast is committed to providing the academics and tools students need to achieve their higher education goals, said Seth Ward, director of Southeasts Office of Dual Credit. By providing a wide-array of disciplines and course topics, we can ensure students get the degree pathways they want and need to be successful. The courses are taught by high school faculty who have met credentialing requirements established by the Coordinating Board for Higher Education through the Universitys academic departments. The high school faculty are designated as Southeast adjunct faculty members and are provided a University faculty liaison to ensure they receive the support they need to instruct successful courses, Ward said. On-site visits, training and professional development opportunities provide a quality experience for the faculty and thus our students.Southeasts Dual Credit program has seen significant growth and interest over the years as more high school students explore options to jump start their higher education goals sooner. In the 2018-2019 academic year, the program has served 760 students in 25 high schools in Missouri and Illinois. The program is committed to providing students courses at an affordable cost.As part of the program, high school students pay their tuition at Southeasts dual credit rate of $95 per credit hour and have access to Southeasts textbook rental service. Students can also use Kent Librarys research services, the University computer labs and the Office of Career Services for help with resume building and employment counseling.Additionally, students have access to Southeasts athletic events, campus events and lecture series, and discounts to the River Campus productions and concerts. We are proud to serve a very diverse community across the southeast Missouri region, and it is of the utmost importance that students in these areas find ways to participate in early college programming that is cost-effective, Ward said. The program helps all students from different backgrounds be able to afford to pursue their educational goals.NACEP is the leading membership organization supporting programs that successfully transition students from high school to college through college credit-bearing courses.NACEP is nationally recognized as an indication of distinction and excellence, and we are thrilled to receive this recognition of our commitment to student success and making college accessible and affordable for students throughout southeast Missouri, Ward said. Students and their parents can be confident that they are receiving comprehensive and dynamic courses and instruction while still in high school as they pursue their higher education goals. As the nations only accrediting body for these unique and impactful educational partnerships, NACEPs standards serve as the model criteria for ensuring parity in faculty, course content, student outcomes and support. Receiving NACEP accreditation means an institution has met the nations most rigorous standard in concurrent enrollment program development, management, and evaluation across multiple, multifaceted program areas.NACEP accreditation demonstrates a commitment to academic integrity and the delivery of an authentic college experience in the high school classroom; it is a goal that every concurrent enrollment program should aspire to and work towards, said NACEP Executive Director Amy Williams. Ensuring program, and ultimately student success requires strong partnerships between secondary and postsecondary education centered on a mutual commitment to quality in all aspects of the program. NACEP accreditation reflects that commitment to quality across all elements of the program. These institutions have committed the necessary resources, particularly campus faculty time and effort, to support high quality concurrent enrollment. For more information about Southeasts Dual Credit program, visit semo.edu/dualcredit.
