Rebecca Gangemella, a dance and multimedia journalism double major at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named a finalist for the Sports Video Group (SVG) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) 2019College Sports Media Award.
Gangemella of Warrensburg, Missouri, is among seven finalists for the Outstanding Special Feature, Collegiate Student category for a sports feature titled Beyond the Field. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges and announced at the 11th Annual College Sports Media Awards ceremony May 30 at theSVG College Summitat the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
TheSVG College Sports Media Awards in association with NACDArecognize the best in class in college sports video production, celebrating those who have pushed the envelope and set a higher standard for all who are part of this talented industry.Awards recognize the outstanding work in college sports video productions from campuses across the country and the staffs that makes them possible. Representing a variety of college athletic departments, conference offices, professional networks, production companies and students, finalists are named across four divisions in 20 categories.
Beyond the Field is a documentary-style news feature video about Southeast student-athletes who volunteer at Franklin Elementary School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Gangemella, under the guidance of Anthony Scherer, TV digital media supervisor in Southeasts Department of Mass Media, conducted interviews with Southeast student-athletes and coaches, and Franklin Elementary Schools principal and teachers. She also filmed b-roll and edited the nearly seven-minute video.
I’m really proud of this piece of work, and it feels really good to be recognized alongside other top national schools, Gangemella said.
The video highlighted the positive impact Southeast student-athletes are making in the local community.
The student-athletes really connect with the kids, and I wanted to showcase the relationships and bonds that they have with the kids, she said. It was a really fun project. It sometimes feels that theres a lot of negative, bad news in the world. This was a really good story for me to put together that shows the good that is happening in our local community and with our students.
Gangemella, who completed the video as part of her Jane Stephens Honors Program project, will graduate from Southeast May 11. In addition to this project, she was responsible for producing multimedia segments, including Redhawk Roundup video sports recaps and Hawks Nest shows for the Arrow, Southeasts student newspaper, where she worked as its video producer and multimedia editor for the 2018-2019 academic year. She also worked as a member of the ESPN+ crew covering Redhawks competitions.
Beyond the Field was a great opportunity to hone her editing skills and work on a longer length film, she added.
The training that Ive had from this experience is also being recognized in this award, especially Anthony, who really does a lot for the students and took me under his wing these past couple of years, Gangemella said. Everything Ive learned about video editing, Ive learned from him too.
Scherer said he is extremely proud of Gangemella and her work on this film.
This recognition shows the amazing talent and skills Rebecca has and the tremendous about of work she put into this project, Scherer said. Southeast is committed to helping students succeed and providing them the tools and opportunities to grow their knowledge and skills. In the Department of Mass Media, we encourage students to work on their video and writing abilities, and Rebecca is a perfect example of the great work our students are doing and the caliber in which Southeast prepares them to compete at the national level.
