Sarah Haig, an associate professor of graphic design at the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), will showcase her series of hand-drawn and digital illustrations for childrens books in the Jurors Showcase opening March 1 in the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus Art Gallery.
The exhibit opens with a reception from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery on Friday, March 1, as part of the First Friday Arts activities in downtown Cape Girardeau. An artists lecture is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, March 27, in the John and Betty Glenn Convocation Center.
Haig teaches graphic design and foundations at UTM and is this years juror for The Annual Juried Student Exhibition to be displayed in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum April 5-21.
Each year one of the faculty members from the Department of Art invites a visiting artist/educator to juror our student show and exhibit their own artwork. This year our graphic design professor, Louise Bodenheimer, invited Sarah Haig. This show will be a great opportunity for our viewers to see original artworks that eventually get turned into childrens book illustrations, said Justin Miller, associate professor of art and exhibitions coordinator.
Haig received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Arts in graphic design from The State University of New York at Oswego. She then received her Master of Fine Arts in installation with an emphasis on printmaking and papermaking from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
Her work ranges in medium, with a continued question of how the medium can further the message within each individual piece. Recently her work had been incorporating a variety of sensors, from a Garmin tracker to Arduino inputs to create contemporary drawings and interactive pieces. She has also written and illustrated a childrens book series for her nephew in hopes that one day he will realize she is the cool aunt.
The River Campus Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the historic Seminary Building in Room 106. River Campus Art Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-7 p.m. on First Fridays. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
