Dr. Jim Dufek
Dr. Jim Dufek, professor of mass media at Southeast Missouri State University, was honored with the Silver Medal Award Feb. 22 by the Cape Girardeau Chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF).
The award was presented at the 2019 ADDY Awards Show that also featured 30 entries from Southeast students.
The Silver Medal Award recognizes men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industrys standards, creative excellence and responsibility of social concern.
“I’m extremely grateful and humbled by this recognition from the Cape Chapter of the AAF. There are many talented producers, writers and artists in this organization, and Im honored to work with them on occasion, Dufek said.As a professor, I have the great pleasure of doing something that I truly enjoy and the satisfaction of bridging the gap between student and professional storytellers.Theres always a demand to craft a useful message for a business, non-profit or start-up, and its a privilege to guide students as they work in our community to produce a promotional program.
Dufek has been a member of the Southeast Department of Mass Media faculty for 36 years, where he teaches broadcasting, television, corporate video and production. As TV and film operations manager at Southeast, Dufek provides students with hands-on opportunities in the Rust Center for Media, Rose Theatre, SETV, Cape Chronicle and Redhawks Update. He also serves as co-director of the annual Faultline Film Festival.
“Jim Dufek is one of the most talented faculty members I have ever worked with in the 22 years since I entered the academy. But he is so much more than even that, said Dr. Pam Parry, chair of the Department of Mass Media at Southeast. He is a professional who is committed to his profession, his students, his department, his University and his community — and often he serves as the bridge between them all. I could think of no one in Cape Girardeau more worthy of this award.”
He is a frequent presenter at industry conferences and, over the years, has contributed production expertise to dozens of broadcast projects, including Off the Grid and the Missouri Historical Societys Missouri Veterans Project. He coordinated local talent and was involved in local location scouting for the 20th Century Fox production of Gone Girl in Cape Girardeau. He also has produced work for ABC News, C-SPAN, ESPN, CNN, KFVS-TV/WQWQ and KBSI-TV/WDKA-TV. He served as producer for international live streaming of solar eclipse activities from Southeast on Aug. 21, 2017 and produced a live webcast of a TEDx presentation from the campus in March 2016.
Dufeks contributions are far-reaching and have extended into the community where he has assisted numerous organizations with video production, including Notre Dame Regional High School, the Cape Girardeau Convention & Visitors Bureau, the City of Cape Girardeau, the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Department, the United Way of Southeast Missouri and many others.
Dufek holds a doctoral degree from Southern Illinois University, a Master of Arts from the University of South Dakota and a Bachelor of Arts from Mt. Marty College.
In addition to the Silver Medal Award, University Marketing was honored with a bronze award for an Arts and Media brochure in the Brochure category, and Louise Bodenheimer, professor of art, took home a bronze award for the 2018 River Campus Summer Arts Festival poster in the Out-of-Home Poster category and a silver award for the 2018 River Campus Summer Arts Festival campaign in the Card, Invitation or Announcement Campaign category.
Southeast students in the Department of Marketing, Department of Art and Design, and Department of Mass Media also were honored for their work, earning a Best of Show, three gold, three silver and four bronze awards.
SE Creative, Southeasts student advertising firm in the Department of Mass Media, was honored with a Best of Show for their Faultline Film Festival posters competing in the Poster Campaign category.
Winning gold awards were SE Creative for its SEMO Craft Beer Festival materials in the Consumer Campaign category; Alexander Bargen, a Southeast mass communication major with an advertising option from Moscow Mills, Missouri, for an ad, Hold on, Im Texting and Driving, in the Ad-Single (Full Page or Less) category; and MK443 for its Cardinals radio spot in the Radio-Single category.
Students in MK449 and AR 416 teamed up to win bronze awards in in the Printed Annual Report or Brochure category for a Creative Crackers brochure and in the Packaging category for Creative Crackers Packaging, and silver awards in the Illustration-Campaign category for Creative Crackers label images and in the Stationery Package-Single or Multiple Pieces for Creative Crackers.
Students in MK443 and AR416 collaborated in the Direct Marketing category to win a silver award for a Shot in the Dark BBQ Rub catalogue.
Students in MK449 and AR408 collaborated in the Social Media Campaign category to win a bronze for Glass Gardens Instagram ads
MK443 students earned a bronze award for their Magnolias Magazine ad in the Ad-Single (Full Page or Less) category.
