Dr. C.P. Gause, professor and chair of the Department of Leadership, Middle and Secondary Education at Southeast Missouri State University, is the co-editor of a new book on the phenomena of the Black male.

The Handbook of Research on Black Males: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Multidisciplinary (International Race and Education Series)” is published by Michigan State University Press and goes on sale Nov. 1.

According to Gause, Black males worldwide are being investigated now more than ever before, but research has not informed much of the response regarding media attention paid to them. The book draws from top researchers in various fields.

Not all Black males are the same, and each of them have varying strengths and challenges, making one-size-fits-all perspectives unproductive, according to the book.

Gause says the book is designed to serve as a comprehensive tool and resource to articulate and argue for policy change, suggest educational improvements, and advocate judicial reform.

The contributors, who are from multidisciplinary backgrounds, focus on history, research trends, health, education, criminal and social justice, hip-hop, and programs and initiatives.

The text, Gause says, has the potential to influence research on Black males and improve lives for a population that is often the most celebrated in the media and simultaneously the least socially valued.

This book will be an invaluable resource to students and researchers who seek to go beyond the superficial accounts of Black males that fill the media, said reviewer Pedro Noguera, distinguished professor of education in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, and faculty director of the Center for the Transformation of Schools at UCLA.

He called the book thought-provoking and far-reaching in scope.

Co-editors of the book are Theodore S. Ransaw and Richard Majors. Ransawis a curriculum and instruction specialist, a curriculum specialist in James Madison College, and affiliated faculty in African American and African Studies at Michigan State University. Majors is a former Clinical Fellow at Harvard Medical School and an Honorary Professor at University of ColoradoColorado Springs. He is the coauthor ofCool Pose: The Dilemmas of Black Manhood in America, which is considered a classic in the field.

The book will be available on Amazon.com.
