Students in high school choir ensembles from across southeast Missouri will perform in the inaugural Womens Choral Festival Oct. 26 at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus.The singers will spend the day working on music as a large group. The festival will conclude with a concert at 5:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.The festival is dedicated to empowering young women through song, said Dr. Barbara Lamont, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Southeast.Students who participate in the festival will have an opportunity to meet with other singers from the area and spend time singing and in fellowship with one another, she said. We are excited to have the opportunity to bring world-famous clinicians to the River Campus for our Mens and Womens festivals and hope to continue the tradition of quality opportunities for young singers in the future.The festival will be led be world-renowned composer, conductor, scholar and music educator Dr. Andrea Ramsey. Before becoming a full-time composer and guest conductor, Ramsey held positions at The Ohio State University and the University of Colorado Boulder, respectively. An award-winning composer with approximately 100 works to date, Ramsey believes strongly in the creation of new music.Capping events Oct. 26, the voices of Southeasts Chamber Choir and University Choir will present their fall concert at 5:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall.The Chamber Choir will be presenting Five Flower Songs, op. 47: The Evening Primrose by Benjamin Britten, Motet VI: Lobet de Herrn, Alleluia by Johann Sebastian Bach, Two Rossetti Songs: Remember by Stephen Paulus and Salmo 150 by Ernani Aguiar.Selections on the program will include Vere languores nostros by Toms Luis Victoria, My Souls Been Anchored in the Lord arranged by Moses Hogan and Ave maris stella by Trond Kverno.The concert will close with Festival participants performing two of Ramseys compositions, Truth and The Woman To This Hour. In addition, the Festival Choir will sing Z. Randall Stroopes I Had a Paint Box.
