Southeast Missouri State University will observe Suicide Prevention Week across campus Sept. 10-14 with events for students, faculty and staff that raise awareness about this important issue.

As members of the campus community, we each have the ability to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and create welcoming spaces where students, faculty and staff can talk openly about mental health, said Torie Grogan, counselor with Southeasts Counseling and Disability Services. Suicidal thoughts are common, and the Missouri Assessment of College Health and Behavioral 2018 Survey estimates that one in five Missouri college students report experiencing suicidal thoughts in the past year, often the result of undiagnosed or untreated mental health concerns. At Southeast, we are fortunate to have preventative and treatment resources on campus, in addition to strong relationships with our community mental health partners. Suicide Prevention Week is vital to promoting these resources and building connections that facilitate suicide prevention as a continuous effort supported by our campus community.

Counseling and Disability Services also offers online and face-to-face suicide prevention trainings athttp://www.asklistenrefer.org/semo. Southeasts Prevention Resource Center provides Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings athttp://semo.edu/preventionresourcecenter/mental-health.html.

The Counselor Training Clinic, located in Scully Building, Room 318, provides confidential mental health counseling services by graduate practicum and internship students. The clinic also offers outreach presentations and mental health screenings on campus. Resources are available at http://www.semo.edu/eduleadcounsel/counselor-training-clinic.html.

Additionally, Redhawk Health Educators provide peer support and outreach events on mental health, wellness and prevention topics. For a list of upcoming events, visit http://www.semo.edu/peered/special-events.html.

Suicide Prevention Week events include:

Sept. 10, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend the Mental Wellness Resource Fair in the University Center lobby. Visit with campus and local community mental health resources, including the Counselor Training Clinic, Community Counseling Center, a Veterans Administration Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Redhawk Health Educators, Gibson Center and more. Free, confidential depression screenings will be provided by Southeasts Counselor Education Training Clinic and Counseling and Disability Services. Additionally, the fair will host an Ask, Listen Refer Suicide Prevention Training Drive with opportunities for giveaways and resources to boost mental health.

Sept. 11, noon-1 p.m.: A free Step UP! Bystander Intervention Training session will be held in the University Center Tribute Room. Step UP! is a prosocial behavior and bystander intervention program that educates students and staff to be proactive in helping others. During this training, participants will raise their awareness of helping behaviors, increase motivation to help, develop skills and confidence when responding to problems or concerns, and ensure the safety and well-being of self and others.

Sept. 12, 11 a.m.-1p.m.: The Redhawk Health Educators will host a Build Your Own De-Stress Kit event in the University Center lobby. All materials will be provided for participants to create a free kit.

Sept. 13, noon-1:30 p.m. and 4-5:30 p.m.: Two free Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training sessions will be held in the University Center Redhawks Room. QPR Training is a suicide prevention module which provides participants with the tools necessary to recognize warning signs and refer individuals who may be at risk for suicide to treatment resources. Participants only need to attend one session.

Sept. 14, noon: The Southeast community is invited to participate in a balloon release to promote suicide prevention and awareness on the steps of Academic Hall.
