The Chateau Girardeau Sundays at Three series will host Sophia Han and Friends Sept. 23 at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus. The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall.Dr. Sophia Han, concertmaster and assistant professor of upper strings at Southeast, joins forces with friends and colleagues Dr. Meghan Berindean, Dr. Mihai Razvan Berindean and Dr. Jia-Rong Gan to present a concert of string quartet masterpieces.The concert presenters were members of the 2014-2016 Eppes Quartet, a fellowship ensemble founded by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Florida State Universitys Francis Eppes and Distinguished Professor of Composition Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.The reunion performance is by the resident graduate string quartet from the school years of 2014-2016 at Florida State University. The four of us became quick friends from the first rehearsal, and our friendship has developed and continued since, Han said. We are very excited that all four of us ended up so close together after graduation and can share our performance with the Cape Girardeau community.This recital program is a culmination of pieces that we learned together as a quartet but also pieces that we've dreamt of playing together for many years, she continued. We are grateful that Dr. Gabrielle Baffoni had this amazing idea of reuniting us in Cape Girardeau and are thrilled that our community can experience the journey of our friendship together through these pieces.Han said audience members can expect to hear a beautiful collection of masterworks for string quartet in range of styles from classical to modern and even tango. The program will include Franz Joseph Haydns Sunrise Quartet, Hugo Wolfs Italian Serenade, Dimitri Shostakovichs String Quartet No. 8, and Astor Piazzollas Four for Tango.An active soloist and chamber musician, Han maintains a public profile performing, coaching and teaching in the Southeast and local communities. An avid orchestral musician, Han has appeared as the concertmaster with the 2016 Lake Tahoe Music Festival Orchestra, assistant concertmaster with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and assistant principal second with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra. She currently serves as assistant concertmaster of Paducah Symphony OrchestraJoining Han, Meghan Berindean is assistant professor of cello and string bass at Austin Peay State University. As an orchestral player, she is currently serving as principal cello of Sinfonia Gulf Coast, and also performs frequently with the Charleston Symphony, the Mobile Symphony, the Southwest Florida Symphony, and the Tallahassee Symphony.Dr. Mihai Razvan Berindean is the principal violist with the Mobile Symphony, and also performs as a member of the Pensacola Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic and Toledo Symphony. He also serves as adjunct faculty at Austin Peay State University.Gan is assistant concertmaster at Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. She performs regularly with Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
