The Gallery at Southeast Missouri State Universitys Catapult Creative House will host Literary Innovations: A Juried National Exhibition Inspired by William Faulkner and Gabriel Garca Mrquez from Oct. 5 through Nov. 29.

An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5 from 5-9 p.m. in the gallery.

The exhibition focuses on the prolific and exciting writings of authors William Faulkner and Gabriel Garca Mrquez, who are both closely identified with literary modernism and known for creating densely woven plots. Faulkner is known for experimental techniques, including the use of multiple narrators, conflicting perspectives and a fluid concept of time. Mrquez, on the other hand, inserted irony and magical realism into his work, incorporating fantastic elements into ordinary situations.

Literary Innovations is in conjunction with the Faulkner and Garca Mrquez Conference hosted by Southeasts Center for Faulkner Studies Oct. 11-13. The exhibition includes a diverse body of work created by national and international artists, and three pieces from the show will be selected to receive a monetary prize.

The panel of jurors includes Christopher Rieger, director of the Center for Faulkner Studies; Chris Wubbena, professor of sculpture; Joni Hand, associate professor of art history at Southeast; Hannah March Sanders, assistant professor of printmaking; and Joshua Newth, instructor of art.

During the opening reception Oct. 5, visitors are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facilities including the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art students studios and current solo exhibition by junior Erin Gericke on the second floor. In addition, there will be live printing in the letter press studio.

Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
