Southeast now has Lactation Rooms available in two locations for nursing or parenting students, faculty or staff to use while on campus. The Lactation Rooms are located in Robert A. Dempster Hall and Kent Library.The Lactation Room in Dempster Hall is located in Room 119. This former conference room was renovated by Facilities Management over the summer to accommodate three individual lactation spaces. Two of the three rooms are accessible. Permission is not required to access the spaces. They are lockable for privacy and available whenever the building is open. Each room currently includes a chair and a small side table.The Lactation Room in Kent Library is located in Room 419. This is a single user room, so users will need to check out the key at the main floor circulation desk for access. This room is available whenever Kent Library is open.The identification of these spaces came about this summer after a parenting student contacted the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity and shared that she was a nursing mother who would be taking classes on campus this fall. She requested information on possible spaces that could be used for her to express milk during the days she was on campus. Facilities Management identified a space in Dempster Hall that was being taken offline as a conference room and agreed to make this a dedicated space for nursing or parenting faculty, staff and students. It was determined that it would be important to have a space on both sides of campus to accommodate faculty, staff and students on opposite sides of campus.These spaces are a part of Southeasts responsibilities under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), 20 U.S.C. 1681 et seq., a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexincluding pregnancy and parental statusin educational programs and activities.
