Christopher Goeke, tenor and professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University, will present a faculty recital entitled Songs My Mother Taught Me at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeasts River Campus.The program will feature a wide variety of literature representing a diverse background and life of learning, performing songs of many styles. Goeke will be assisted in the recital by Matthew Yount on piano, Sara Edgerton on cello, Sophia Han on violin and Mary Miller on harpsichord.The concert will include an aria from Bachs Cantata #9 with Baroque instruments and a set of four romantic songs by Gabriel Faur, which highlights this composers gift of melody and virtuosic piano accompaniments.The centerpiece of the recital is a set of gutsy and spirited Gypsy Songs by Antonin Dvorak, which includes the program title song Songs my Mother Taught Me.I have really enjoyed getting to know these songs better. The texts are rich of nuggets of wisdom about life, love, death and remaining free, Goeke said.Goeke will also present selections that he actually learned from his mother, Mary Jane Goeke, his first teacher. These songs include gems from early 20th century art song and music theatre, and will conclude with an aria from the opera La Bohme by Puccini.I have really enjoyed putting this recital together, not just because of the connection to my mother, but also in looking at other influences in my performing and teaching, Goeke said. I think we are all a composite of many influences personal, professional, environmental, teachers and mentors. This program brings together so many of the musical, professional and personal influences in my life its become a wonderful nexus of ideas.All foreign language songs will be presented with projected supertitles.
