Open auditions for Southeast Missouri State Universitys Department of Music production of Jacque Offenbachs opera La Prichole will be held Aug. 21.Auditions are open to all Southeast students and members of the community 16 and older, and will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeasts River Campus.Those auditioning must prepare one classical song, aria or golden age music theatre selection, in any language and provide sheet music.Callbacks will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, and will include assigned music and cold readings. Southeast students selected for the cast must register for the one-credit hour MU398 Opera Workshop.La Prichole follows the adventures of two young street musicians, Prichole and Piquillo, hoping to marry while avoiding imperious politicians.Southeasts production will be performed in English and has been updated to include a modern day setting and characters in New York City.In a way, this will be a premier performance of this story, said Dr. Christopher Goeke, professor of music at Southeast. Its a modern twist on a fun show that involves struggling street performers, La Perichole and Piquillo. Chaos ensues with mistaken identity, a jealous lover, shady politicians, a strained wedding, an incarcerated groom, New York City residents and police, whining housewives of New York City and a long forgotten celebrity. But all works out in the end as the clever Prichole figures out how to win the day.Rehearsals will be every Tuesday and Thursday Aug. 28-Dec. 11 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Not all cast members are called to every rehearsal.Performances are scheduled Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. in the Donald C.
