The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music Recital Series will present a program of music for cello and piano entitled Cello Melodies from Around the World at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at the River Campus.Featured on this recital will be Dr. Sara Edgerton, cello, and Paul Thompson, piano, faculty members in the Department of Music at Southeast. The concert will open with the rhapsodic work for cello and piano, Kol Nidrei, by German composer Max Bruch. This piece incorporates the chanted prayer Kol Nidrei, which is sung in Jewish synagogues during the evening service of Yom Kippur. A contrasting melody with flowing accompaniment depicts the Jewish people in captivity in Babylonia, weeping by the Babylonian rivers. Next on the program will be a recent work by the British minimalist composer Gavin Bryars, entitled With Miriam by the River, which is a short tone-poem inspired by the River Ouse in Yorkshire, England. The first half of the recital will conclude with a movement from the Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8, by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. This majestic work includes haunting melodies and harmonies from Hungary, with gypsy and folk-band influences. The second half of the concert will feature a series of short pieces from a number of different cultures and traditions. Short traditional songs from France, China, Ireland and Spain will be performed, as well as the famous Libertango by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, all arranged for cello and piano. Three short Gershwin songs will also be included on this recital. This concert will bring together the sounds, traditions and melodies from a number of different, distinctive cultures and places from around the world, said Edgerton, the cello soloist for this recital. I think the program will be very colorful and attractive; there will be some very familiar melodies as well as music that will sound quite unusual and will have unexpected harmonies and rhythms. We really hope to evoke a number of beautiful and intriguing cultures and places with this program.Edgerton is professor of cello and string bass, and conductor of the Southeast Missouri Symphony. Thompson is instructor of flute and also teaches many different courses in the department, including Keyboard Harmony, Jazz Appreciation, and a number of University Studies courses.TicketsTickets may be purchased by contacting the River Campus Box Office, located in the Cultural Arts, Center, 518 S. Fountain St., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by calling (573) 651-2265 or by visiting RiverCampus.org.
