Southeast Missouri State University faculty member, Trudy Giasi has been selected as one of 27 esteemed educators to participate in the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) 2018 class of emerging leaders.ASCD is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching and leading mainly focused in K-12 education. Giasi has been enrolled in the Emerging Leaders program as the only representative from higher education.I am excited to be able to continue working closely with the K-12 educational community in order to better prepare our Southeast students for their future work in the field, Giasi said.Educators selected for the Emerging Leaders program have been in the education profession for five15 years; demonstrate a passion for learning, teaching and leading; come from a diverse range of positions, locations, cultural backgrounds and perspectives; hold promise as leaders; and are committed to ASCD's beliefs and to pursuing leadership opportunities.As a participant in the Emerging Leaders program, Giasi will spend two years with a cohort of 26 other educators from across the country, learning and working together to help shape education policy, advocate for the whole child, and explore multiple ASCD leadership pathways.Giasi will join her fellow participants for the first time at the Leader to Leader conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in November. Over the next two years, she will assist with professional conferences, hold various positions on committees, write for ASCD and become more involved in local and national policies.I will gain first-hand knowledge of and experience with some of the most amazing things happening in education throughout the world, Giasi said. More importantly, I will have an international platform for sharing the educational innovations being implemented here at Southeast and in our partnering schools.Giasi will join the Southeast community this fall as an assistant professor of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. She will provide instruction and field supervision to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing majors in middle/secondary education and elementary, early and special education.Giasi graduated from The Ohio State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. In 2005, she earned a Master of Education in science education, and in 2018 a Master of Arts in educational administration and a doctorate in STEM education, both from The Ohio State University.
