Brenda Seyer: Transition Spaces 18.1 opens Friday, July 6, in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus.

The public is invited to the opening reception scheduled for 4-8 p.m. July 6. The exhibit will remain on display through Aug. 12. Admission is free.

In her artwork, inspired by colors, values and movement, Seyer uses a non-traditional painting method to create images by brushing wax and dye onto silk.

The unpredictability of this media and method offers me a problem-solving challenge in design, Seyer said. This results in a calm, meditative process of renewal. The ironing out of the wax is exciting as it reveals the final work I have created. I hope it gives the viewer the same feeling of wonder and awe that I first felt.

Jim Phillips, museum manager and senior curator, added, “Brenda is one of the few artists in southeast Missouri who is passionate and skilled in the batik process which she uses to create beautiful landscape images. The process involves applying hot wax and silk fabric dye onto haboti silk. This requires patience, time and careful consideration.”

In addition to her exhibition, the Crisp Museum is hosting a Creative Watercolor workshop taught by Seyer July 17, 24 and 31. During this workshop, Seyer will demonstrate how watercolor can create a variety of images, from solid to translucent, single or multiple colors, or light and dark, and how to purposefully manipulate pigments with other materials. Participants will be able to explore watercolor’s abilities as they create practice works with their own creativity and from reference images. A preregistration of $25 is due July 10 for adults only of all skill levels. Supplies are required. For more information, visit semo.edu/museum/education.

Seyer earned a Master of Art in teaching from Southeast. Before retiring in 2013, she taught at Lindbergh High School in St. Louis, Missouri, Charleston High School in Charleston, Missouri, and Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Illinois. She formed the art program and designed the art room for Saxony Lutheran High School in Jackson, Missouri, where she taught for 13 years.

She has taught art workshops for the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Southeast Missouri State Universitys Art Academy in Cape Girardeau since 1986, and presented numerous workshops on batik and watercolor techniques throughout the local region. She is an active member of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouris Figure Drawing Group and Visual Arts Co-operative in Cape Girardeau.

Seyer has exhibited her work in locations throughout southeast Missouri and Illinois. She has received many awards during her career, including best of show in the fiber art category in an exhibition at the Garden Gallery in Cape Girardeau, first place in the watercolor category in an exhibition at the Glenn House in Cape Girardeau, and three first-place awards in exhibitions at the Womens Club of Paducah in Paducah, Kentucky. Her artwork is privately owned and displayed in many homes in Missouri, Virginia, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina and China.

The Crisp Museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 1-4 p.m. on weekends and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of the month. For more information, call (573) 651-2260 or emailmuseum@semo.edu.
