Southeast Missouri State University announces the River Campus Summer Arts Festival production of The 39 Steps, opening June 15 as part of its two-week extended season. The 39 Steps, a melodramatic comedy adapted by Patrick Barlow and based on a novel by John Buchan and a film by Alfred Hitchcock, is a whodunit that meets a spicy spy novel. It takes one boring mans life and thrusts it into a nationwide manhunt while trying to evade the mysterious 39 Steps organization. The 39 Steps will be performed at 7:30 June 15, 16, 20 and 21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 24, in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre at the Southeast River Campus. The show feels like a mix of spy novels and Monty Python, with four actors playing more than 150 zany characters, said Dr. Kenn Stilson, chair of Southeasts Conservatory of Theatre and Dance. The story is a hilarious parody of what is considered the father of all action movies, he said. Its a rip-roaring comedy, fast paced and clever. Audiences are going to delight in this very funny, action-packed adventure."The show will be directed by Stilson, and the company consists of current Southeast Conservatory students and professional faculty and staff.
