Southeast Missouri State Universitys Greek Week 2018 held April 14-22 was an enormous success, raising more than $29,000 in the spirit of philanthropy to support the local community and Southeasts Redhawk Food Pantry, with this years blood drive finishing as the largest in Greek Week history.The blood drive netted 1,194 units that were donated to the American Red Cross, exceeding all previous Greek Week blood drive totals by 248 units.On Sunday, Michelle Johnson with the American Red Cross said this was the largest blood drive in recent history and certainly the largest blood drive in Greek Week history, said Dr. Bruce Skinner, associate vice president for student life.During the week, Southeast Greeks raised $29,009.57 to benefit a number of organizations, including the United Way of Cape Girardeau, Special Olympics and the Greek Week Future Fund. This years Greek Week theme was Disney Classics.This year, we started four new programs, the Shiver and Slide event to support Special Olympics, a clothing drive, a Lip Sync Battle competition and Redhawk Food Pantry collection, said Kimberly Baich, the student director of Greek Week.In addition, Southeasts Greek community collected more than 15,000 canned goods or food items. This years items were donated to the Redhawk Food Pantry, which serves members of the University community and is located in the Textbook Rental area of Kent Library.Because we were donating to the Redhawk Food Pantry, there was increased interest in support and donations, Skinner said. Because of this success, we expect the pantry to be well stocked for an entire year.Canned goods were also donated to Southeasts regional campuses and Red Star Food Pantry.[caption id="attachment_29192" align="alignright" width="300"] Greek Week Student Executive and Steering Committee members[/caption]New this year, the Greek community also hosted a clothing drive to benefit the Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau. More than 4,000 men's, womens and childrens clothing items were collected.The clothing drive was the idea developed from our students looking for a new way to support the local community and it was very successful for its first year. We believe it will become an annual event and new tradition for Greek Week, Baich said. It reflects our fraternity and sorority members desire to find and commit to more service-oriented events that impact our local community.Other Greek Week events included the Greek Games and Chariot Races, Walk-A-Mile in Her Shoes, Special Olympics, Greek Sing, God and Goddess Competition and various spirit and community service activities, including volunteer work at the Missouri Veterans Home and along the River Walk.The following awards were presented during the week:
