Deborah Cook, president of the Missouri Association of School Nurses, will present "Band-aids and Thermometers: Overcoming Perceptual Barriers to the School Nursing Effectiveness" at 5 p.m. April 23 in the University Center Redhawks Room. She will discuss the pivotal role a school nurse's office can play in bettering health outcomes.Cook is the chair of the Dunklin County Health Department's Board of Directors and president of the Southeast Missouri Area Health Education Center's Board of Directors. She is a certified asthma educator and has presented on asthma at the National Association of School Nurses Annual Conference, the American School Health Association conference and numerous state level events. She was employed by Kennett School District #39 for more than 30 years and has served as the director of Health Services for the past 24 years. In 2006, Cook received the American School Health Associations School Nurse of the Year award.The event is sponsored by Southeast's Department of Communication Studies, Department of Modern Languages, Anthropology and Geography, and Department of Nursing, and is funded by a grant from Funding for Results.
