Moscow Festival Ballet returns to the Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus April 28 performing Don Quixote as part of the 2017-2018 Bank of Missouri Touring Series.
The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall.
To have this world-class touring company once again present their magnificent ballet is a unique and exciting opportunity for the Cape Girardeau area, said Bob Cerchio, assistant director of Southeasts Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts.
The story, which inspired the Broadway musical The Man of La Mancha, is a timeless classic about one mans quest to battle the overwhelming forces of evil, he said. It translates beautifully into this full-length performance.
Quixote recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who frequently deals with his rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood with unique wit. He must find ways within his fantasy to deal with the realities of the world.
The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet.
Moscow Festival Ballet returns to the River Campus after performing Cinderella in 2016, Giselle in 2014, Don Quixote in 2012 and Sleeping Beauty in 2010. The troupe has performed extensively throughout the United States since 1997 and, since its inception,has completed two tours of Europe with extraordinary receptions in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The company also has performed with great success in Turkey at the Istanbul Festival and in Greece at the Athens Festival and recently completed a two-month tour of Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.
