Dr. Jim Dufek, professor of mass media at Southeast Missouri State University, was honored with the Dr. R. Ferrell Ervin Excellence in Teaching Award at the annual Student Government Association (SGA) banquet April 23.Student Government believes Dr. Dufek exemplifies the intelligence, work ethic and compassion it takes to thrive in the field of higher education, said Gabriel Harman, chair of SGAs University Affairs Committee. Dr. Dufek possesses all of the qualities we look for in a recipient of this award, and we are pleased to recognize and celebrate his achievements.Dufek was nominated by Dr. Pam Parry, chair of the Department of Mass Media, for his ability to demonstrate exceptional instruction and knowledge of his respective field, passion for the livelihood and growth of his students, and notable involvement with participation and sponsorship of student organizations. He has a passion for life-long learning that he imparts to his students, Parry said. His expertise and wisdom in the classroom is enhanced by his commitment to them in the TV studio. He is a remarkable professor, who has made an impact on this campus for decades. The R. Ferrell Ervin Excellence in Teaching Award was established to honor the professor of mass communication and the late chair of the former Department of Communication, Dr. R. Ferrell Ervin who served as an active member in both the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the Public Relations Society of America. During his 17 years at Southeast, Ervin instilled a will in students and his academic colleagues to teach with excellence in mind.Dufek embodies the same wonderful qualities as Ervin, who had such a long-lasting positive impact on the University and its students, said Parry.Dr. Ervin was my chairman and friend for many years, and it is a wonderful tribute for the SGA to name an award after him and an honor to receive this award, Dufek said. Im extremely grateful to Dr. Parry for the nomination and to the students that were involved in the selection process. It is a great honor to have this recognition from the students, and I am humbled and grateful.Dufek was recognized for his commitment to student success and for going above and beyond classroom teaching.Dr. Dufek is a remarkable teacher and has had an extraordinary impact on the lives of our students, Parry said.He is also dedicated to meeting industry standards and preparing his students for extraordinary careers. His classes require extensive hands-on, in-studio and remote production elements. In addition to on-campus programming, he guides and directs students to produce programming for local television outlets, including Focus on Southeast, River Tales, Independently Speaking, Cape Chronicle and Redhawks Update. His students produce real shows aired on real airwaves because of his commitment to his students and the University, Parry said.Dufek is a professor and the television and film operations manager in the Department of Mass Media and received the Faculty Merit Award in 2010. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Media Communication Association-International and the Missouri Motion Media Association, and served as president of the Media Communication Association-International. He is a member of the Broadcast Educators Association and the College Media Association. He is also a member of the Southeast Missouri Hospital Board of Trustees; vice president of the SoutheastHealth College of Nursing and Health Sciences; and president of the Notre Dame Regional High School Education Foundation.Photo Caption: At left isDr. Jim Dufek, recipient of Student Government Association'sDr. R.
