The Southeast Missouri State University Concert Band and Wind Symphony will present the final concert of the 2017-2018 Music Ensembles Series with Hot and Spicy on Tuesday, May 1, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the Southeast River Campus.The program will feature a variety of selections in an array of colors and textures, and the work of the instrumental music students in the Holland School for the Visual and Performing Arts.The Concert Band will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Concert Variations followed by The Forge of Vulcan, which is filled with the metallic sounds of the heating and shaping of metal. The final selection, The Gathering of the Ranks of Hebron,depicts the biblical story of 1 Chronicles 12: 23-38 when 350,000 men came together, armed for battle and determined to make David king of Israel, eventually making the first ill-fated attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem.The Southeast Wind Symphony opens with Zing! followed by the world premiere performance ofPhrygian Fragmentsby Southeast undergraduate student composer Jacob May of Naperville, Illinois.The students will also perform the two-movementSan Antonio Dances,which provides musical snapshots of the flavor of San Antonio and the minimalistic work of Bruce Yurko inDanza No. 2.I am thrilled to feature the work of the wind and percussion students from Southeasts Department of Music in this program of diverse music, said Dr. Martin Reynolds, director of bands and conductor of the Concert Band and Wind Symphony. Our students will undoubtedly demonstrate the musicality and versatility of emerging young artists.This program and our students are sure to please.The program will conclude with the combined efforts of both the Concert Band and Wind Symphony students in the music of Spanish composer, Oscar Navarro.Libertadoresis a large-scale programmatic work divided into two sections.
