Southeast Missouri State Universitys Department of Social Work will present a free public viewing of The Age of Love on March 20.
The award-winning documentary, which follows the comic and poignant adventures of 10 seniors who attend a speed dating event for 70- to 90-year-olds and seek another chance atlove, will be shown at 4 p.m. in the John and Betty Glenn Convocation Center at Southeasts River Campus.
The public is invited to the viewing followed by a discussion and question and answer session led by the documentarys director Steven Loring.
The point of the documentary is to dispel the myth that older adults arent interested in love, romance and emotional intimacy, said Dr. Dana Branson, assistant professor of social work. I hope that people who watch the film will realize that love and connection with others continue to be important no matter how old you are.
Companionship does not necessarily mean marriage, but rather the emotional intimacy people find in one another, added Branson. Often they are interested in someone to talk with, go to dinner with and a partner for general fun and activities.
Loring will be present at the screening for a discussion about the reasons for making Age of Love, and the story of his mother, who desired companionship after she lost her husband after several years of marriage. He will also answer questions from the audience.
The department will also host a speed dating/companionship event for older adults at 4-6 p.m. April 10 in the John and Betty Glenn Convocation Center at Southeasts River Campus.
This is an opportunity for older adults in our local community to find new companionship and to feel young, attractive and special, said Branson.
This event will be capped at 12 women and 12 men. To ensure the safety of participants, participants must be 65 years old or older; single, widowed or divorced; self-ambulatory and absent of significant cognitive deficiency.
