The Mildred Hendrick Wallace Endowed Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.The scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Hendrick of Plano, Texas, who made a $20,000 gift to establish the award.The scholarship honors the late Mildred Hendrick Wallace, a Naylor, Missouri native who spent the majority of her adult life in Granite City, Illinois. The renewable scholarship will be awarded to a returning non-traditional student enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University attending the Cape Girardeau campus whose education has been interrupted and finds it necessary to return to complete a degree that improves their marketable skills for employment. Financial need will be considered but is not required. Recipients must be in good academic standing with an overall minimum 2.0 grade point average. The University Scholarship Committee will select the recipient.Mildred Hendrick Wallace was married to Hugh Wallace, a Methodist minister, for 50 years. Mrs. Wallace was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense Mapping Agency located in St. Louis, commuting daily for more than 30 years. She received the Employee of the Year Award in 1983.She attended Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at night. She completed three years but was unable to earn her bachelors degree due to outside obligations, including assisting her husband while he attended seminary and providing support for their church. In addition, she was active in providing numerous selfless acts of kindness within her family and community. A life-long humanitarian and devout care-giver, this scholarship is in support of those wanting to further or complete their higher education but have struggled to do so due to humanitarian or family obligations.
