Crisp Museum Announces Arts and Crafts Workshops

TheRosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus announces their Spring/Summer 2018 Arts and Crafts Workshops for youth and adults beginning in March.Handmade Book Cover with Caroline KahlerMarch 6, 9-11 a.m.Registration is free for adults only. Supplies are required.Participants will learn how to go beyond the standard flat surface of book covers and make use of small objects in a multimedia piece.Finger Weavingwith James PhillipsMarch 10, 1-4 p.m.Registration is $15 for ages 14 and up. Supplies are provided.Participants will choose a pattern and color scheme to create a weaving completely by hand while learning about fiber elasticity, natural dyes and durability.Pysanka Eggswith Barbara DuncanMarch 20 or 21, 1-4 p.m. (participants need only sign up for one day)Registration is free for ages nine and up. Supplies are provided.Participants will learn the rich history of legends, superstition, folklore and symbolism as they complete a Pysanka egg with dyes and meaningful designs using a wax resist process.Gourd Bowl Makingwith Ellen HahsApril 7-8, 1-4 p.m.Registration is $15 for ages 15 and up. Supplies are provided.Participants will create a bright, translucent-colored surface that allows the natural surface of the gourd to show through and add decorations and embellishments to make a beautiful finished bowl.Wrapped Cord Basketwith Ellen HahsMay 6, 1-4 p.m.Registration is $15 for ages nine and up. Supplies are provided.Simple supplies can have unlimited design potential. Participants will create a small basket with wrapping and stitching techniques.Plein Air Paintingwith Marty CoulterMay 23-25, 1-4 p.m.Registration is $200 for adults only of all skill levels. Supplies are required.Marty Coulter will discuss his color palette and painting techniques. With his guidance, participants will learn how to apply his techniques in their own painting practices while on location near Southeasts River Campus in downtown Cape Girardeau. This class requires a minimum of six participants.Painting Demonstration and Artist Talkwith Marty CoulterMay 24, 7 p.m.Walk-in registration is open to the public for $20, and is free for Southeast students, faculty and staff with a Redhawks ID.In this live painting demonstration, Marty Coulter will narrate his thought process when observing color intensity, values and color temperatures in shapes as he plans and creates on canvas what he sees in a scene.Artist Talkwith Craig ThomasJuly 6, 6 p.m.Free and open to the public.Craig Thomas will give a talk during the reception of his solo exhibition to discuss his works on display. "Craig Thomas: Painting from Life" will be on display in the Museum July 6-Aug. 12.Drawing Still Life and Figurewith Craig ThomasJuly 10-12, 8 a.m.-noonRegistration is $25 for ages 15 and up. Supplies are required.Craig Thomas will lead the class through decision making processes including comparison of shape, line, position, and value, using both still life set ups and from a figure model to make a likeness and/or capture a mood.Creative Watercolorwith Brenda SeyerJuly 17, 24 and 31, 9 a.m.noonRegistration is $25 for adults only. Supplies are required.Teaching artist Brenda Seyer demonstrates how watercolor can be manipulated with other materials. Participants will be able to explore watercolor's abilities as they create practice works with their own creativity and from reference images. This class is for beginners and beyond.To register, contact museum@semo.edu or (573) 651-2260. Registration fees are due one week before workshops start dates. Supply information will be provided as needed per class.
