"Preparing Students for Life After College" will be the focus of the Winter 2018 Faculty Development Day on Thursday, Jan. 11, at Southeast Missouri State University. The program is scheduled for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom and will feature keynote speaker Jeffrey Selingo, a best-selling author and award-winning columnist who helps parents and higher education leaders imagine the college and university of the future and how to succeed in a fast-changing economy. Faculty Development Day is hosted by the Provost's Office, Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning, Career Services, Academic Advising and Academic Support Centers.Faculty Development Day at Southeast has become an energized method for bringing faculty together to continue becoming more effective at teaching and providing learning experiences for our students. It always is a great way to mark the halfway point of the academic year and beginning of the Spring semester," said Dr. Karl Kunkel, Southeast provost. It isincreasingly vital in contemporary times to have faculty learn and share ideas as we collectively explore how we can continue and expand offering degree programs preparing students for their next chapter, which often is a career in the new and evolving global economy. Im excited to have Jeff Selingo, a nationally acclaimed writer on the subject, provide his ideas and challenges as the central theme for this years Faculty Development Day. I look forward to hearing the facultys reactions and initiatives for moving forward on this very important aspect of student success and fulfilling the university mission.Jennifer Woolf, coordinator of career counseling in Career Services, said, Career Services is proud to be a part of hosting Jeff Selingo at Southeast during Faculty Development Day."Mr. Selingos ideas surrounding career readiness and employability of graduates offer the perfect catalyst to shape discussions across campus on what we are doing well, what we can improve upon, and the important role faculty bring to students as scholars, advisors, and mentors along their career journeys," she said.Mary Harriet Talbut, senior instructional designer in the Center For Scholarship in Teaching and Learning, added,Faculty Development Day is not only a time for faculty to gather with colleagues, but to focus their thoughts to one aspect of their teaching for the coming semester. With a keynote speaker setting the stage, the breakout sessions that follow build upon those ideas presented to give faculty the tools to have a successful semester.Valdis Zalite, director of Academic Support Centers, saidFaculty Development Day will be a great opportunity to bring the campus community together on behalf of the students it serves."Sharing ideas, best and promising practices, and innovative solutions as an institution offers us a chance to discuss the often changing landscape of higher education paired with how students navigate our system," he said. "This year is particularly exciting as we get to hear from Jeff Selingo on the topic of career readiness which will encourage all of us to think proactively and not reactively with respect to student success while on campus and as students transition into their respective careers. All Southeast faculty are invited to the Winter Faculty Development Day that begins with breakfast and registration at 7:30 a.m. To register for the Winter Faculty Development Day, visit here. For more informationor to request special accommodations for this event, email Dr. Bethany Alden-Rivers at baldenrivers@semo.edu.The day's schedule is as follows:Event program
