Historian to Present Lecture on President Harry S. Truman Oct. 24 at Southeast

Author and historian David Pietrusza will deliver a lecture at Southeast Missouri State University on Tuesday, Oct. 24, examining the impact of President Harry S. Trumans 1948 election and its influence on America.

Pietruszas lecture is entitled 1948: Harry Trumans Improbable Victory and the Year that Transformed America. The public is invited to the lecture at 7 p.m. in Kem Statuary Hall in the Aleen Vogel Wehking Alumni Center at 926 Broadway.Admission is free.

The lecture is presented by the Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Religionand is made possible by a gift to the Southeast Missouri University Foundation from George Hartsfield and his wife, Dr. Paula Kindrick Hartsfield of Jefferson City, Missouri.

Pietrusza has produced a number of critically acclaimed works concerning 20th century American history, including four works on presidential electoral history. He is the author of TR’s Last War: Theodore Roosevelt, The Great War, and a Journey of Triumph and Tragedy; 1932: The Rise of Hitler & FDR – Two Tales of Politics, Betrayal, and Unlikely Destiny; 1920: The Year of the Six Presidents; 1948: Harry Trumans Improbable Victory and the Year that Transformed America; and many others.

As a noted presidential scholar, Pietrusza has served on theSiena College Research Institute(SRI) Survey of United States Presidents and on the C-SPAN/Siena CollegeStudy of The First Ladies of The United States.

He has also served on the City Council inAmsterdam, New York, as vice president of the Fulton-Montgomery Community College Foundation, and aspublic information officer for theNew York State Governor’s Office of Regulatory Reform and the New York State Office of theMedicaidInspector General.

He has served as president of theSociety for American Baseball Research(SABR) and was later the editor-in-chief of the publishing companyTotal Sports. He is an elector of theNational Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.

Pietrusza received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from theUniversity at Albany.
