The annual favorite Fall for Dance takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15-18 and 2 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus.The performance features original choreography by faculty, guest artists and students providing the variety of dance audiences enjoy. Faculty member, Rubn Gerding, new to The Conservatory of Theatre and Dance this fall, will present a beautiful contemporary ballet in three sections. Gerding has also collaborated with faculty member, Alyssa Alger, to present the pas de deux from the ballet, Les Corsaire. The show will feature an original dance piece utilizing traditional West African dance by choreographer Julie Bata, director of Lipan Urban African Performing Arts Collective.Hilary Peterson, coordinator of dance and associate professor, said, Julie Batas work will excite and energize audiences with elements of African dance, including poly-rhythms, vigorous movements and a sense of tradition.Bata is a performer, choreographer, educator and lifelong student of dance and movement. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in cultural anthropology from the State University of New York and her Master of Fine Arts in dance from Texas Womans University.She has performed with Kibola Sougei, co-founded Sundiata Drum and Dance Ensemble, and created and directed Ba Deman Childrens African Dance and Drum Ensemble.Bata has taught at institutions and festivals throughout the United States, and her choreography has been produced by institutions and ensembles nationwide. She is currently a full-time dance professor at Houston Community Colleges Central College where she directs the African Dance and Drum Ensemble.
