Southeast Missouri State University will observe Suicide Prevention Awareness across campus Sept. 12-24 with events for students, faculty and staff that raise awareness about this important issue.Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals ages 15-35, said Torie Grogan, director of Counseling and Disability Services. Not everyone who has a diagnosis of depression will experience suicidal thoughts; however, 90 percent of individuals who complete suicide are experiencing a mental health and/or substance use concerns. It is important to remember that there are effective treatment options to address these mental health and substance use concerns. Suicide prevention is about increasing awareness of risk factors for suicide and reducing the stigma associated with seeking help and referring individuals to supportive treatment options.Counseling and Disability Services also offers online and face-to-face suicide prevention trainings at http://www.asklistenrefer.org/semo. Spring St. This informational summit will bring together state experts and local voices in healthcare, safety education and others, highlighting opioid abuse and discussions on interventions in Missouri. Registration was required before Sept. 1, 2017. This event will be offered in two locations on campus, the University Center lobby and the Kenneth and Jeanine Dobbins River Campus Center.Sept. 15, noon: The Southeast community of students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a balloon release to promote suicide prevention and awareness on the steps of Academic Hall.Sept. 24: The Southeast Community is encouraged to participate in the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk at Cape County Park North. Registration for the walk opens at 10 a.m. with a noon start time for the event.
