This exciting concert will feature the departments two jazz ensembles comprised of students from Southeast.
The concert will open with the Jazz Lab Band which will play an assortment of jazz styles, from Blue Monk written by jazz great Thelonious Monk to the jazz standard Doxy by Sonny Rollins.
This is the younger group, but they play with plenty of energy and excitement, said Robert Conger, Southeast professor of music.
Featured performers in this ensemble include Sydney Reynolds of St. Louis, Missouri, (piano); Correy Smotherson of University City, Missouri, (trumpet); Bill Reed of Festus, Missouri, (trombone); Chris Spivey of Bertrand, Missouri, (trombone); and Michael Frangello of Carterville, Missouri, (baritone sax). Jazz vocalist, Lindsey Grojean of Chaffee, Missouri, also will be featured on the tune, Nice and Easy, made popular by the great Frank Sinatra.
Southeasts premiere jazz band, the Studio Jazz Ensemble recently performed at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Chicago and were praised by the judging panel which singled out four Southeast students for special individual performance awards: Dustin Haigler of De Soto, Missouri; Steven Watkins of Oak Ridge, Missouri; Matt Flanagan of Cape Girardeau; and Trey Moss of Jackson, Missouri.
In the upcoming concert, the Studio Jazz Ensemble will feature many varied jazz compositions from some of the greats in big band jazz. Highlighted in this concert will be Critics Choice from the Buddy Rich library, What You Dealin With? from the great Wycliffe Gordon and Minnie The Moocher sung by the talented Grojean. Highlighted student soloists include Walter Wright of Cape Girardeau, (tenor sax); Jon Allgeyer of Pevely, Missouri, (trumpet); Flanagan (trombone); Haigler (piano); Kris Spala of Jackson, Missouri, (drumset); and Nick Smentkowski of Cape Girardeau (bass).
