Mrs. Missouri America 2014 Highlights Eating Disorders Awareness Week

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 16, 2016 Dr. Erin Rae Fluegge, Mrs. Missouri America 2014 and associate professor of management at Southeast Missouri State University, will launch an array of events during Eating Disorders Awareness Week Feb. 22-27.

Fluegge will present Be Gentle With Yourself & Others at 5 p.m. Feb. 22 in Glenn Auditorium of Dempster Hall. She will share stories of her journey and offer advice on coping with body image and personal expectations.

As a marathon runner and runway model, Fluegge has seen firsthand the importance of loving yourself through societal, professional and personal challenges. During this session, she will share stories of her journey, offer advice on coping skills with relation to topics surrounding body image and personal expectations, and explain how learning and appreciating our own self-value is equally as important as valuing those around us.

As an advocate for womens empowerment, Fluegge is actively involved with the VintageNOWFashion Show, which raises funds for the Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau. She also founded and serves as the faculty advisor for the womens networking organization on campus, Little Black Book: Women in Business. She recently received the 2015 Zonta International Women of Achievement Celebration Award, recognizing her accomplishments and contributions to the community as an educator. Through her commitment to her students, her community and women everywhere, she has come to understand the importance of being gentle with yourself and others.

Fluegge holds a doctoral degree in business administration from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of General Studies and a Master of Business Administration from Southeast Missouri State University. A professor in the Department of Management and Marketing at Southeast, she teaches a variety of management courses, including leadership, negotiation, and organizational behavior.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week events will continue with an eating disorders recovery panel at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 in the University Center Redhawks Room. Participants will listen to the recovery experiences of several who have overcome eating disorders and how they learned to cope. Mary Ann Farmer a counselor with expertise in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders will be present to facilitate discussion and answer questions.

A documentary titled Someday Melissa will be shown at noon Feb. 24 in Crisp Hall Room 125. This documentary chronicles the story of 19-year-old Melissa Avrin who lost her life to an eating disorder. Created by Melissas mother Judy, the film was inspired by the writings of Melissas journal.

A presentation titled Scale Smash and Talk is planned for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Student Recreation-North Multipurpose Room. At this session, staff from both Counseling and Disability Services and Recreation Services will present on the issues of societal standards of beauty and focus on repairing positive body image.

Sara Wagganer, assistant director of fitness and wellness at Southeast, and Cierra Moore will present a free Source Barre class at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Student Recreation Center North- Group Fitness Studio. Source Barre is a ballet class that works on small isometric movements blending barre work, yoga and Pilates.

Southeast dietetic interns will give a presentation titled What is Normal Eating? at 6 p.m. Feb. 25 in the University Center Redhawks Room. The presentation will focus on living a healthy lifestyle in the maze of unhealthy choices.

An indoor biathlon is planned for Feb. 27 in the Student Recreation Center-North. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the race beginning at 11 a.m.

Throughout the week, free and anonymous screenings from University Counseling Services staff and volunteers will be available for those wishing to determine whether they may be at risk for developing an eating disorder. These screenings will be available for 30 minutes before each event.

A life-size Ken and Barbie will be on display at Recreation Services, where those who are interested may join the #SEMObodyproud campaign, participate in other activities and get information and door prizes throughout the week.

The weeks events are sponsored by the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Success, the College of Health and Human Services, Counseling and Disability Services, the Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology, the Department of Communication Disorders, the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, the Department of Human Environmental Studies, the Department of Nursing, the Department of Social Work, the Department of Psychology, the Department of Theatre and Dance, Recreation Services, the Southeast Department of Athletics and the student Dietetic Association.
