Megan Singleton
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 22, 2016 Visiting artist Megan Singleton from St. Louis, Missouri, will be showing her latest artwork in the exhibition titled, To Rest Without Sinking beginning in February at Southeast Missouri State Universitys Catapult Creative House, 612 Broadway, in downtown Cape Girardeau.
The exhibition will open on the First Friday in February, Feb. 5. Her installations crisscross the boundaries of contemporary craft, combining sculpture, hand papermaking and digital applications.
A one of a kind creative arts and industries incubator, Catapult Creative House continues to promote artists working across disciplines to promote the interaction between diverse areas of study. In preparation for this exhibition, Singleton has been working with members of the Southeast Department of Biology and local farm, Laughingstalk Farmstead, to collect natural plant material from the Cape area. This matter was incorporated into the research and paper used to create the large-scale sculptures occupying the gallery.
Singleton is interested in how art can address and engage people with the natural world, and connect with the physical actions of a growing, living environment. This, in turn, can inspire communities and individuals to care and foster the growth and revitalization of our landscapes and their natural systems.
A reception is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Feb. 5 in the gallery. Attendees are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facilities including the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art students studios upstairs.
Singleton will present a free lecture entitled, Paper, Place, and Process: A Contemporary Approach to Historic Craft, on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 6-7:15 p.m. in the Catapult classroom.
Catapult Press will also host a two-day workshop with Singleton, from 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Feb. 4, and Friday, Feb. 5, entitled Plants, Place, Paper. The workshop is free for all Southeast Missouri State University students. Tickets are $30 for one or both days or $25 for Arts Council Members and Southeast faculty and staff.
