- Stories from band members
Step Two: Visit Us
After you fill out the Step One form, we'll connect with you about next steps. You can visit us at River Campus or meet with us online. This is your chance to ask questions and see what it's like to be in the SEMO Bands.
Step Three: Audition
After your visit, the final step is your audition! We'll help you prepare for Marching Band, Wind Symphony, Color Guard, Drumline, or the Music Major program.
"My experience in the SEMO Band program has meant the world to me. Already in my 2 years of membership, I feel like I’ve made a lifetime’s worth of memories. I have gotten to perform at BOA Finals in Indianapolis and Saint Louis, I performed with the Wind Symphony at MMEA, and most importantly have made some of my best friends. Along with the memories, being a part of the SEMO Band program has given me tons of leadership opportunities, I have served as a section leader and as a member of the band council, and I feel these positions have given me valuable experience for my future career, despite not wanting to be a professional musician."
Vinny Garavalia, Social Studies Education Major

We're excited you want to join us! The SEMO Marching Band is the largest student group on campus. We travel, play at big events, win awards, and bring energy to everything we do. We WANT you to join us!
To try out for the SEMO Marching Band, watch the video on the Marching Band Audition page. You'll find our Music Window portal and a PDF of music you need to play.
For your video audition, first say hello and tell us about yourself. Then play four things: an F major scale, a chromatic scale, Articulation Exercise #1, and one flow study. Don't wait to send your audition—scholarships are given on a first-come, first-served basis!
Questions about wind auditions? Contact Prof. Michael Chapa at mchapa@semo.edu. For percussion, contact Dr. Shane Mizicko at smizicko@semo.edu.
We're excited you want to join the SEMO Color Guard! As part of the largest student group on campus, the color guard brings energy and art to the SEMO Marching Band. Whether you've done color guard before or are brand new, we WANT you to join us!
To try out, watch the video on the Marching Band Audition page. Pick "Color Guard" and watch Luke Christisen's video. Your audition should include: your name, hometown, high school, and major; your background in color guard or related activities (like dance or theater); and anything else you want us to know. Send your video to Luke Christisen at ljchristisen@gmail.com. If the file is too big, use Google Drive. Auditions happen in early June—we can't wait to hear from you!
The Southeast Wind Symphony is SEMO's top wind and percussion group, open to all majors by audition. Audition music is given out at the end of each term, and auditions happen the Sunday before classes start.
For audition info, contact Dr. Jim Daughters at jdaughters@semo.edu.
The University Concert Band is open to all Southeast students—no audition needed. It's a great way to keep playing music in a fun, friendly group.
To join, contact Dr. Jim Daughters at jdaughters@semo.edu.
