Southeast Missouri State University isn’t just a college; it’s a community with a story. For over 150 years, SEMO has been shaped by bold traditions, vibrant student life, and a Redhawk spirit that runs deep.
If you’re new here, you might hear someone say they’re hiking up Cardiac Hill before grabbing lunch at Towers, or that they’re meeting friends at the UC. Don’t worry if it all sounds unfamiliar at first. Soon enough, you’ll be tossing around terms like a seasoned pro.
To help you feel at home faster, we’ve put together this behind-the-scenes guide to some of SEMO’s most used campus lingo. Here’s your crash course in SEMO slang:
Arrow
You’ll hear students mention the Arrow—and no, they’re not talking about archery. This is SEMO’s award-winning student-run newspaper. The printed publication is also available online to students for free.
Cardiac Hill
If you’re living in Towers, this one’s important. Cardiac Hill is the steep shortcut between Towers Complex and the rest of campus. It’s a rite of passage—and a built-in workout.
Houck
You’ll likely spend some game days at Houck Field, cheering on the Redhawks during football or women’s soccer matches. It’s one of the many places where the SEMO spirit shines brightest.
Pig Lot
Yes, Pig Lot is a real place. Also called MMTF, it’s the largest perimeter parking lot near the Student Rec Center. With two shuttle stops, it’s a top spot for commuters and resident students alike.
River Campus
Love the arts? River Campus is your haven. Nestled along the Mississippi River, it’s home to theatre, music, dance, and art events. Whether you’re a performer or an audience member, something magical is always happening there.
Rowdy
SEMO wouldn’t be SEMO without Rowdy, our fierce and feathery mascot. He’s been rallying Redhawk pride since 2005—and got a pretty epic makeover not long ago.
Towers
When someone says Towers, they might mean two things:
- The Towers Complex, one of the main residence halls and home to more than a thousand students.
- The Towers Landing, a dining spot inside the complex that offers six food options—perfect for a quick bite between classes.
UC (University Center)
The UC is the heartbeat of student life. Need lunch? A quiet study corner? A place to meet up with friends or attend an event? You’ll find it all here.
