Questions to ask your Admission Counselor

Some people may think that admission counselors are scary! This is because they don't know the questions to ask and that admission counselors are a resource for them. We came up with some questions to come to them with!

Here are some questions to ask:

General College Experience:

  • What is the student-to-faculty ratio?
  • What's the campus culture like? (e.g., vibrant, close-knit, etc.)
  • How does the college support student success (e.g., tutoring centers, career counseling)?

Academics:

  • What are some unique programs or research opportunities in my major?
  • Are there opportunities for study abroad?
  • Does this program have strong connections to potential employers?
  • What is the average class size for courses in my major?
  • Can I speak with a current student or recent graduate in my major?

Campus Life:

  • What percentage of students live on campus all four years?
  • How far is the nearest grocery store or pharmacy from campus?
  • What are some popular clubs and activities for students with my interests?
  • What are some of the on-campus housing options like?

Cost & Aid:

  • What is the average amount of financial aid awarded to students with my academic record and financial need?
  • Does the college offer merit scholarships specifically for students in my major?
  • What scholarships and financial aid options are available to students like me?
  • What are the average student loan debt levels for graduates?

Communication & Resources:

  • What is the deadline for submitting applications for scholarships?
  • Can you send me a sample schedule for a first-year student in my major?
  • Does the college offer tutoring services for students who need extra help?

Getting to Know the College:

  • How many students from my state attend this college?
  • Does the college offer virtual tours or live Q&A sessions for prospective students?
  • What are the college's strengths and weaknesses compared to similar colleges?
