Continue to main contentThe mission of the Prevention Resource Center is to promote and facilitate the development of community prevention initiatives concerning the use and misuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by serving as a catalyst for mobilization and change in the communities of Service Area 21.
We are a resource for the communities in Service Area 21, providing educational materials, training opportunities, and more to mobilize change.
What We Do
- Provide technical assistance to state registered coalitions targeting youth substance misuse prevention
- Educate coalitions on current information from the state and federal governments concerning substance misuse, grant opportunities, training opportunities, etc.
- Offer trainings regarding substance misuse (e.g. Youth Mental Health First Aid, Signs of Suicide, 40 Developmental Assets, and other related topics)
- Provide local tobacco retailers with educational materials
- Provide educational resources and interactive kits to schools and organizations
Who We Serve
The Prevention Resource Center covers Service Area 21 which consists of six counties:- Bollinger
- Cape Girardeau
- Madison
- Perry
- Scott
- Sainte Genevieve
Initiatives
Our staff visits every tobacco retailer in Service Area 21 and provides the Missouri State law signage, education materials, and training opportunities to retailers. We also receive the Prevention Resource Center (PRC) grant which focuses on alcohol, tobacco, and other youth drug prevention throughout Service Area 21. PRC staff regularly attends meetings and help registered coalitions with funding.
Upon request, PRC staff may present at your school, organization, and/or event. Please contact us if you are interested in a presentation on alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and/or mental health. The PRC grant offers at least three trainings per fiscal year. In the past, some of these trainings have been mandated reporter, current drug trends, ethics, etc. We typically offer these services for free.

Mental Health
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is a free training that teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to young people showing signs of a mental illness or in a crisis, and connect them with the appropriate help.
Signs of Suicide (SOS) is a free training developed to decrease the incidence of suicide among adolescents. The SOS program will instill knowledge and an adaptive attitude about depression to it's participants.

Prescription Drugs Information
Learning how to properly dispose of and store prescription medications is a vital step in the fight against the misuse of prescription medication. The PRC provides Deterra bags to pharmacies and health departments in Service Area 21 upon request. Please request a Deterra bag at your local pharamacy or health department if you have any unused medications. -
Educational Materials & Kits
Community organizations and schools can check out educational kits and materials for free from the Prevention Resource Center. The PRC has a wide variety of educational materials available. Materials can be utilized by all ages, starting at early childhood and going through late adulthood. -
Youth Substance Misuse Prevention Programs
While building relationships in each community, we gain a better understanding of the specific needs. The Prevention Resource Center implements several evidence-based strategies to help educate the community on youth substance misuse.
