It's that time of year again, and the Southeast community is excited to welcome all students back to campus! The Southeast experience includes more than just attending classes; it's about being engaged in your University home and taking advantage of the countless opportunities we offer beginning the first week! Use this guide to see all the fun events we have planned for you.

New Student Move-In Day 8 am - 3 pm; SRC-North

First-year students will check in during their scheduled time. Check-in times are listed in the move-in information mailed to each student in early June. Sponsored by the Office of Residence Life.

Living in your Community: Residence Hall Floor Meetings & Activities, Evening, Floor or Hall Lounge

Residence Hall Lounges All new students living in the residence halls will meet with their Resident Assistant and Hall Director who will introduce them to on-campus living.  Please bring this booklet with you to the meeting. Your Resident Assistant will provide you with more information once you check into your hall.  Sponsored by the Office of Residence Life.

Move-In Bash

8-10 p.m., Parker Field

Meet new people while enjoying great music by Six Appeal, a virtual graffiti wall, a bungee bounce, Kona Ice, and other fun activities.  Rain plan – Student Recreation Center- North.  Sponsored by Campus Life & Event Services.

Art and Artifacts: Highlights from the Collections

Through August 24, River Campus-Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum

Art and artifacts from acquisitions including works by Rodin, Picasso, Jacob Lawrence, Jake Wells, Maria Martinez, Tony Da and other luminaries.

"Yellowstone National Park: Transition Spaces 14.1"

Through August 24, River Campus-Crisp Museum

An exhibition space devoted to the work of artists within 150 miles of Cape Girardeau. This series features the work of Wendy Cooper.

First STEP Orientation

7:45 a.m.-1 p.m., University Center

Students who have not attended a First STEP orientation must attend today's session.  Failure to complete the First STEP process will prevent students from registering for classes. First STEP includes the Writing Placement Test, orientation, advising, and lunch. Sponsored by New Student Programs.

Commute and Connect!

9 a.m., Student Recreation Center-North (2nd Floor)

Get the inside scoop on what it's like to be a commuter student. Mingle with other commuters and learn how to get involved and connect with campus. Be sure to get your free Southeast T-shirt to wear to the Welcome Convocation! The group leaves at 9:40 to head to the Show Me Center for   Convocation. Sponsored by New Student Programs and Recreation Services.

Welcome Convocation

10 a.m., Show Me Center

The Welcome Convocation is the one chance you will have to be with all of your peers entering Southeast in 2014!  Be sure to wear the t-shirt you received during Residence Hall Check-In or at the Commute & Connect event Friday morning.  At the Welcome Convocation, you will be greeted by University President Dr. Kenneth W. Dobbins and Student Government President Caleb Cockrill.  You will also learn more about other Opening Week activities.  Sponsored by New Student Programs.

Southeast 101

11 a.m., Various Campus Locations

As first-year students, you can connect with faculty and staff as well as your Opening Week leader during this interactive session. Lunch is provided with your Southeast 101 group. Southeast 101 groups depart from the Show Me Center at the conclusion of the Welcome Convocation. Sponsored by New Student Programs.

College Meetings

2:30-4:30 p.m., Various Campus Locations

Students will have the opportunity to hear the Dean of their College speak as well as interact with faculty members from their departments. Shuttles will be available to take students back to the Show Me Center parking lot at the conclusion of your meeting.

Midnight Slip-N-Slide

11:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m., Ignite House (415 N. Pacific St. – across from Grauel Hall)

Crazy fun! Whether you want to take your turn or laugh at everyone else, come have a blast at the slip-n-slide with all of your new friends. This is one of the "memory making" events of your college career. Sponsored by Ignite Campus Ministry.

Addicted to Pinterest? Here's your opportunity to create and bring a variety of Pinterest ideas to life. We'll provide the supplies; you provide a little creativity. Sponsored by Campus Life & Event Services.

Student Involvement Fair 5:30-7 p.m., University Center Get involved on campus by finding the perfect student organization for you.  Many of the student organizations will have a booth with information, and some groups will showcase their talents.  Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about life outside of the classroom.  Sponsored by Campus Life & Event Services.
Capture the Flag 8 p.m., Kala Stroup Fountain/Kent Library Lawn Bring your friends or roommates, and join an epic game of capture the flag on campus. It's the most entertaining way you can learn the layout of the main campus and meet lots of new people. Sponsored by Ignite Campus Ministry.

The Group Fitness Free Preview offers students opportunities to try our Group Fitness classes for FREE. Classes begin today. Try TRX Suspension Training or Insanity for a challenging full-body workout that is sure to leave your muscles shaky and begging for more. You may try Yoga Flow for a relaxing and rejuvenating workout day. Or if you want to try something new, you can try our Power Vinyasa Yoga or Source Barre classes.  We have a variety of classes to choose from, such as Aquafit, Cycle Fit, Core Strength, and more, so try different classes to find your favorites!  Make sure to take advantage of our 2-week Free Preview!  A semester unlimited pass is $40.00 or a one-time pass is $5.00. Instagram Scavenger Hunt 12 p.m., Southeast Campus

The event will run from Aug. 26 at 12:00 p.m. to Aug. 27 at 11:59 a.m.  Take photos of a variety of places on campus (see Instagram announcement @SEMissouriState) and submit these photos for prizes using the hashtag #SEMOHunt and tagging @SEMissouriState in the photo.  We'll give out a variety of prizes for different photos (i.e. first to complete the hunt, best photo, etc.). Winners will be announced when we feature their photo on Instagram and tag them in it.  All prizes will need to be picked up at the Wehking Alumni center and Instagram accounts MUST be public for us to view the photos.

Fall Theatre Auditions (Ensemble, as needed) 6 p.m., River Campus- Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall

The two main stage (Hairspray and MacBeth) and one second stage (Durang One Act Comedies) fall shows will hold auditions and have callbacks the following evening. Come prepared with two contrasting 60-second monologues or a 60-second monologue and a 16-bar cut of a song of your choice.

  • Hairspray, winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance, and deliriously tuneful songs.
  • Shakespeare's shortest and bloodiest tragedy, MacBeth tells the story of a brave Scottish general (MacBeth) who receives a prophecy from a trio of sinister witches that one day he will become King of Scotland.
  • Durang One Act Comedies:
    • Naomi in the Living Room: Naomi, when visited by John and Johnna, her son and daughter-n-law, is alternately friendly and insulting. Johnna copes her best, but when John changes his clothes to look like Johnna, things start to unravel.
    • Wanda's Visit: Jim and Marsha have been married for thirteen years and are feeling a little bored and unhappy. Wanda, Jim's old girlfriend, shows up for a visit and becomes the guest from hell!
    • For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls: In this parody of The Glass Menagerie, the fading Southern belle, Amanda, tries to prepare her hyper-sensitive, hypochondrical son, Lawrence, for "the feminine caller."

This is an opportunity for incoming students to learn about fraternity life at Southeast.  Greek Life gives students the opportunity to network, socialize, and give back to the community, and the IFC Showcase is the place to get all the information you need to make the best decision of your life and GO GREEK! Butterfly/Pollinator Garden Planting 2-6 p.m., Charles Nemanick Alternative Agriculture Garden You are invited to participate in the planting of a large Butterfly and Pollinator Garden at the Charles Nemanick Alternative Agriculture Garden.  Learn about selecting and installing the types of plants needed to create habitat for many species of butterflies, pollinators, and birds.  Sponsored by the Horticulture Club, the Nemanick Garden, the Charles L. Huston Greenhouses, and the Department of Agriculture.
Football Tailgate 4-6 p.m., In front of Houck Stadium (Bellevue Street) Kick-off each home football game with two hours of live music, free refreshments, and appearances by the Golden Eagles Marching Band, Sundancers, Cheerleaders, and Rowdy! Personal tailgating space is available in the Wehking Alumni Center parking lots. Stay tuned to GoSoutheast.com for additional details, including band and vendor schedules.
Football vs. Missouri Baptist 6 p.m., Houck Stadium Cheer on the Redhawks in the 2014 football home opener! Student admission is free with a valid Southeast ID, and students are encouraged to cheer on the Redhawks in the Missouri National Guard Redhawks Nest student section.
The Lighthouse BBQ & Worship 6-8 p.m., The Lighthouse (1115 Broadway) Join us for a FREE BBQ, games, fun, and our first worship service of the year! Our building is located three doors down from Pagliai's Pizza.  Sponsored by the Lighthouse Campus Ministry.
