Exceptional Child/Early Childhood Special Education

In addition to the Southeast Missouri State University Cape campus, this degree is offered at our Poplar Bluff Delivery Site and our regional campuses in Kennett and Sikeston.


The Exceptional Child: Early Childhood Special Education program of study prepares future teachers to work with children with exceptional learning needs in early childhood and elementary school settings. Exceptional Child: Early Childhood Special Education students have the opportunity to participate in Tomorrow’s Teachers Learning Community, where they take courses and live in a residential hall with other Exceptional Child Education majors. Students also receive support in preparation for the Missouri General Education Assessment, which is required for admission to the Educator Preparation Program. We also provide our future educators the tools to learn to use and integrate instructional technology across our curriculum.

What You'll Do

  • Be certified to work with and teach children with exceptional learning needs ages birth – 3rd grade upon successful completion of this program and licensure exams
  • Add on certification in Elementary Education (Grades 1 – 6)
  • Participate in multiple field experiences in local classrooms
  • Integrate technology into the curriculum with our EDvolution one-to-one instructional technology program
  • Have the opportunity for student teaching abroad, including our partnership with Eagles College in Iquique, Chile
  • Have opportunities for leadership in our numerous student organizations
  • Have full-time faculty with experience in the classroom as their primary instructors
  • Enjoy the benefit of a nationall accredited program
