Who Am I Between the Grids, an exhibition of works by Chenxi Gao, will be on view Friday, March 7, through Friday, March 28 in the main gallery at Catapult Creative House.
Chenxi Gao is a print-based artist residing in Fayetteville, AR. Born and raised in China, Gao earned her BFA from Baylor University and her MFA from the University of North Texas. By pondering her relationship with multiple living spaces since childhood, she explores her sense of self in the shifting of cultural and social environments. Gao has exhibited nationally and internationally in the United Kingdom, and her work has entered multiple permanent collections, such as the Bradbury Art Museum.
Who Am I Between the Grids reflects the artist’s contemplation of her emerging sense of self. Works in the exhibition record the shifting intimate spaces and larger social and cultural environments as the artist, Chenxi Gao, moved from one home to another, from rural to urban, and from China to the United States. The recurring grids throughout the exhibition create a framework of organization, stability, and rigidity. Gao seeks to trace her temporary connection with the spaces by layering and manipulating materials, while wondering if she truly belongs.
An opening reception for Who Am I Between the Grids will take place on Friday, March 7 from 5-7 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
