In addition to the basic training course, the academy offers specialized programs including: DWI Accident Investigation, the Law Enforcement Supervisors' School, Ground fighting, Hostage Negotiation, Firearms Refresher, Tactical Communications, Defensive Tactics, and Tactical Response for Patrol Officers.
The Academy offers Departments the opportunity to train on the Firearms Training Simulator (F.A.T.S.) machine. This simulator was updated in 2007 with new secnarios and includes Mace, TASAR, M16 assualt rifle as well as basic Glock handgun and shotgun. This simulator is now permanently located at The Academy. The Simulator is designed to offer officers an opportunity to face varied situations where the use of force is an issue, and to test whether the proper level of force is used by the officer. Departments may schedule officers on the F.A.T.S. machine by contacting the Law Enforcement Academy for a supervised session. There is no cost to departments for this F.A.T.S. training and it is offered as a service to the law enforcement community by The Academy.
No P.O.S.T. Continuing Education Units will be offered for F.A.T.S. training due to the unstructured nature of the sessions, and the ability of the officer or
department to conform the training to their own needs. To schedule a session, contact Lawrence Fleming at The Academy.
