University Police Response

The Department of Public Safety has University Police Officers on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, working foot patrol and vehicle patrol throughout campus. The Department is responsible for Building and Ground Security, Dispatch/Radio Communication, Parking Enforcement, Crime Prevention, Emergency Medical Response/First Aid Services and Uniformed Security. A University Police Officer responds to all reported crimes and investigates in a timely manner. Alleged violations of local, state, and federal law are referred for prosecution. Possible violations of the University Code of Conduct are forwarded to the Office of Judicial Affairs.

Emergency Medical Response and First Aid

The Department's Police Officers are trained in emergency first aid and respond to any medical emergency on campus.  First Responder Services are provided by EMS from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department and the Cape County Private Ambulance Service. The officers contact and assist the Cape County private ambulance service if transportation to a local hospital is needed.

Timely Warning of Crime

Timely advisories are made to the University community when known crime risk may endanger students or employees. This is completed by using one or more of the following: Submitting advisory and prevention information to administrative staff for distribution; preparing, posting, and distributing bulletins; initiating press releases; or providing crime summary information to the campus newspaper and local city newspaper.

The University utilizes a multi-layered toolbox for providing emergency information to faculty, staff, and student populations. For information on the University Notification System and the Emergency Response and Evacuation Procedures please visit the Campus Emergency Website or call 573.651.2215
