New York Artists Equity Association: Recent Gifts

"New York Artists Equity Association: Recent Gifts" will open Nov. 1 in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus.

The exhibition is comprised of a gift of art works from the New York Artists Equity Association (NYAEA) and includes works recently added to the Crisp Museum's permanent collection. Works represented in the exhibition range in styles, interests and medium and include paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures from more than 50 artists. A few of the artists in this collection include Ida Applebroog, Violet Baxter, Lois Dodd, Leon Golub, Chaim Gross, Jacob Lawrence, Komar and Melamid, Philip Reisman, Andrea Serrano and Lorna Simpson.

The University will acknowledge the gift of artwork with a news conference at 1 p.m. Nov. 2 in the museum lobby with light refreshments to follow. The public is invited to attend a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 4.

NYAEA traces its roots back to 1947 when AEA was founded as "a national, non-political, esthetically non-partisan organization representing the professional artists of America." Today NYAEA functions primarily as an advocate for artists' issues.

The museum first acquired 24 works from this collection in honor of George and Placide Schriever in 2002. With this new gift from the New York Artists Equity Association, Inc., the Artists Welfare Fund (AWF), the NYAEA ARTBank and Regina Stewart, the collection will be about 175 works.

The exhibit will remain on display through Jan. 29.

The museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends. For more information, call (573) 651- 2260 or email
