Around the Edges: Photographs by Steven Poster

Around the Edges: Photographs by Steven Poster

April 24-June 14, 2009

The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum presents "Around the Edges: Photographs of Steven Poster," from April 24 to June 14, 2009.

The public is invited to attend a reception for the artist on Friday, April 24, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Having practiced as a photographer for all his life, Steven Poster uses composition, light, and focuses on detail to bring the viewer closer to his subjects. While the eye is meant to freeze the image and then pour over details in a straight photograph, the eye in Poster’s photographs appears to have license to roam, to move in lazy saccades across the image, to see it one way, then to see it another way.

Many of Poster’s photographs are taken in urban spaces, but find a way to circumvent the impersonal nature of so much urban photography. Poster has also wandered into the world of small town America, that citadel of folk feeling so well documented by Walker Evans, William Cristenberry and Lee Friedlander. Poster comes to town not to document dying traditions but to meet people and pay attention to people as they momentarily and inadvertently reveal their secret selves in public. Poster has also made a living as a cinematographer. The overlap between the cinematographic and the photographic art may also explain the special quality inherent in his photographs.

Critic Jonathan Goodman has observed, "Trained and active as a cinematographer, [Poster] has a sure grasp of the implicit narrative in the still image, whose resonance indicates a sympathy with whatever it is that comes his way." Poster worked on Blade Runner and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and was Director of Photography on Donnie Darko, Daddy Day Care, Someone To Watch Over Me, Stewart Little 2, and the award winning Madonna video Like a Prayer.

The exhibition was organized through Katharine T. Carter & Associates. Financial assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
