Working and Teaching Remotely


In case of inclement weather, university cancellations, or other emergencies, it is important for faculty, staff, and students to be able to communicate with each other remotely. Southeast Missouri State University provides tools to maintain productivity through dependable communication. These resources require advanced preparation in order to implement, so it is advised to learn and practice with these tools before a situation would require you to work off-campus.

Setting Up Voicemail

Voicemail is a great way to not miss an important message if you are outside of your office. When you are working from home, you can remotely check your work voicemail by calling 651-2660; enter your extension and # sign; then enter your voicemail password and # sign. Respond to the prompts to listen or delete voicemail messages. For additional information or to set your phone up with Voicemail, refer to the Telecommunications guide.

Web Conferencing or Teaching with Zoom

Zoom can be used to host synchronous online meetings that allow you to share video, audio, and content. It can be used for committees, teams, and classes. Participants can easily join a Zoom meeting using the meeting ID that has been provided to your by your host. In additiona, meetings can be recorded. Zoom can also be used to record presentations, with or without attendees. Visit the Zoom Information Guide to get information on setting up Zoom for your class. You can also view online videos for using Zoom. See all the features Zoom has to offer. *NOTE: Do not remote into your work computer to use Zoom. To avoid lag time, Zoom and all video conferencing services require direct connection.

Microsoft Office 365 and Teams

Faculty and staff can use their home computer to do most of their work by using Office 365. Log in to Office 365 to access MS Teams, OneDrive, and Outlook email. MS Teams is a collaboration environment allowing small work groups, committees, and units to share files, chat, video conference, and stay connected when working remotely. Microsoft provides these brief video tutorials on using Teams effectively.

VPN - Virtual Private Network Connection

The campus VPN allows you to connect to the campus network from your home computer to your work computer. This is extremely useful when you need access to services and resources only available on the campus network or if your work computer has specialized software not available on your home computer.   1. If you want to connect using a Mac computer or mobile device (i.e., iPad)
  2. If the connection to your work computer fails, your work computer could be in sleep mode or need to be restarted. A technician will restart your computer for you.
  3. If you have multiple individuals in your household attempting to sign in to the campus VPN service, contact the IT Help Desk.

Emailing Your Class

Use your university-provided email account to contact fellow faculty and staff, as well as your students. Use mailing lists to send mass emails to each of your classes at a time. Sign into your email account at mail.semo.edu.

Teaching with the Learning Management System

Through the Learning Management System at Southeast Missouri State University, instructors can interact with students by posting lessons, assignments, quizzes, and online discussions. Sign into the LMS using your Southeast ID at learning.semo.edu. To learn more about how to use and navigate the LMS, refer to the Moodle guides. Resetting Your Password

In order for the following procedure to work, you must have already set up the Password Reset Facility prior to forgetting your password.

  1. reset.semo.edu
  2. Enter your SEKey Username
  3. Enter your SEMO ID number (S0 number)
  4. Enter your PIN
    • Your PIN will be your two digit day and two digit year of your birth (not the month)
  5. Select Submit
  6. Select to either receive a text message to the phone number or an email to the address listed on file
  7. Select Submit

Check Your Emails

As a student, it is important that you are checking your email inbox several times a day. This should be especially true when you are working remotely or taking any online classes. Use your university-provided email account to contact your faculty, staff, and other students. Sign into your email account at mail.semo.edu.

Accessing Classes with the Learning Management System

Canvas is the learning management system the Southeast campus will move to in Spring 2021. At the current time, there are some courses using Canvas as a pilot. Canvas can be accessed at semo.instructure.com
