Moodle is Southeast Missouri State University's current supported Learning Management System (LMS) and is integral to the university's teaching and learning. On campus, online, and hybrid classes rely on the use of Moodle as a LMS. That said, it is standard practice to re-evaluate LMS options, particularly in light of the entrance of new LMS vendors into the marketplace, the consideration of recent shifts in market share for legacy vendors, and looking for open-source LMS solutions.

In March 2019, a Task Force was created to review the capabilities of the Moodle LMS in comparison to other leading LMS solutions in higher education. The campus LMS is a primary component of the student experience and facilitates teaching and learning at Southeast.

The Task Force accomplished the following:

  1. Developed a set of criteria to evaluate and compare different LMS solutions. Criteria were developed by members based on experience with Moodle, evaluations and articles from other institutions as well as a short survey to the campus community.
  2. Invited three leading LMS vendors to campus to demonstrate their solutions. Each vendor was provied an outline of our criteria as well as an extracted Moodle course to convert to their system for their demonstration.
  3. Evaluated each solution based on its strenghts and weaknesses.

The Task Force initiated a Request for Proposal (RFP) to potentially select a new LMS. The three vendors who represent the market share of LMS solutions provided product demonstrations for the university. They are:

  • Canvas
  • D2L
  • Blackboard
