The Faculty Senate of Southeast Missouri State University met on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, in the UC Missouriana/Redhawks Room. The following Senators were present: Kevin Dickson (Chair), Janice Ward (Chair-Elect), Diane Wood (Membership Chair) Rick Althaus, Doug Atwood, Daniel Beard, Larry Bohannon, Stephanie Chamberlain, Brandon Christensen, Eric Clements, Debra Lee-DiStefano, Don Jung, Ziping Lui, Charles McAllister, Phil Nacy, Tiffany Parker, Jian Peng, Joyce Renaud, Desma Reno, Claudia Ruediger, Alberta Sautter, Sophia Scott, Rachel Morgan Theall, Carol Veneziano, Candide Walton, Julie Weathers, Victor Wilburn, Glen Williams, and Chris Wubbena. Provost Ronald Rosati and Student Government Liaison Rebecca Masur were also in attendance. Senators not in attendance but were represented by an alternate, were Seidu Sofo, David Powell, Larry Underberg, and Marcus Bond.

Bill Eddleman-Reports from the “Southeast in the Year 2020 Committee.” Bill requested feedback from the faculty on the Brown Bag Lunch in regards to the year 2020. Several Senators stated that they are concerned about the technology online courses verses the in class face to face courses. Students will be loosing the quality, discipline, the skills to problem solve, and

Senator Jung stated the calendar is for 2013-2017. Senator Jung made a motion to approve this and Rachel Morgan Theall seconded the motion. Discussion-Senator Atwood said that his department had concerns about passing the Winter Intersession without more analyzes about its impact on the regular semesters. Senator Atwood made a motion to amend this purposed bill by removing the Winter Intersession begins and final exams lines. A second was made by Senator Chamberlain. Provost Rosati asked the question of what kind of analyzes do they want to see. Senator Atwood stated that they would like to see if the Winter Intersession affects the enrollment of the Spring or Fall semesters in a negative way. Down the road if it starts cutting into our Spring enrollment, does that mean some courses get cancelled. If this occurs what happens to the faculty if we have those courses that are cancelled. Also he stated that their departments are not given the choice of what classes to offer but rather being told which ones are being offered.

Senator Jung discussed the Resolution for Summer 2012 Six-Week Session Removal. This Resolution was amended to change dates.

Senator Diane Wood discussed the Faculty Search Advertisements and the Provost introduced revised amended language for the language in the Faculty Search Advertisement.


Debbie Lee-DiStefano discussed Merit Based Performance, as well as, Budgets for Faculty Searches.

Senator Rick Althaus introduced Service Policy (Faculty Handbook 3.E) for discussion for future sessions, as well as, Research Sections 1-5 (Faculty Handbook 3.D.1-5).

Senator Wubbena discussed Feedback on Southeast in the Year 2020.

Senator Stephanie Chamberlain discussed Course Redesign. The Senate collectively came up with parameters regarding Course Redesign and found that any future course redesign should follow course and curricular procedures.

Senator Diane Wood discussed University Standing Committees. She introduced three issues related to University Standing Committees, such as inactive status of committees and the name and issue of term limits for the commencement committees.


Chair Kevin Dickson discussed the ballot going out for faculty senate to election dates, as well as, emeritus bills going to the board meetings.


Provost Rosati discussed the items in the packet. Some of these items were as follows: Ideas for Consideration, Higher Learning Commission – Policies Adopted on second reading Credit Hours, the Chairpersons Review Survey Form, Summer School Packet, University Planning Committee, University Native American Culture Committee, Faculty Development Day – January 12, 2012, and the Boilerplate Wording for Faculty Position Advertisement.


Student Government Liaison Rebecca Masur reported on the activities of the Student Government. End Report.
