XLII, No. 2

May 09, 2007

The Faculty Senate of Southeast Missouri State University met on Wednesday, May 09, 2007 in the Missouriana Room of the University Center. The following Senators were present: Martha Zlokovich (Chair), Mary Elizabeth Ambery (Chair-Elect), Jim McGill (Membership Committee Chair), Rick Althaus, Stephanie Chamberlain, Michael Cobb, Mary Ann DeLine, Kim Dillivan, Marc Fulgham, Pricilla Hornby, Elaine Jackson, David James, Daniel MacLeay, Jayanti Ray, Willie Redmond, David Smith, Marc Strauss, Larry Underberg, Jill Young, and Xuesong Zhang.

Absent and not represented by their Alternates were: David Briggs, Beth Easter, Benjie Heu, Sophia Scott, Lucinda Swatzell, Carol Veneziano, Haohao Wang, and Janice Ward. The Elementary, Early & Special Education department was not represented.

Approval of minutes Vol. XLII-01 was moved by Senator Underberg and seconded by Senator DeLine. The motion carried.

Chair Zlokovich appointed Senator Rick Althaus as Parliamentarian.

Senator McGill, Chair of the Membership Committee, reported that Beth Easter, representative of the College of Health and Human Services, is no longer on the Faculty Senate, therefore cannot serve on the Membership Committee. Senator McGill distributed ballots to elect a new representative. Pricilla Hornby was selected to represent the College.

Senator McGill distributed a list of the Membership Committee's recommendations for the Faculty Senate's Legislative and Reporting Committees for 2007-2008. He indicated that the Faculty Handbook states that all University Standing Committee members and Faculty Senate Committee members may not succeed themselves. Some of the vacancies on the Legislative and Reporting Committees were filled by members who served the previous term. He indicated that he was unsure of whether or not to proceed because it will not be following the rules specified in the Handbook. Senator Althaus recommended proceeding. He indicated that he believes the statement in the Handbook that says that a member who has served a full term cannot succeed themselves is an editorial error. He indicated that he and the Administrative Assistant will research the history on that this summer to verify. It was suggested that the members in question be approved on a temporary basis until August 29, 2007. If the information is verified, the members in question can be approved for the duration of their term. If not, they will either be replaced by qualifying faculty or the Handbook can be evaluated and revised. The Senate agreed. Senator McGill moved to accept the recommendations by the Membership Committee with the above amendment. The motion was seconded by Senator Dillivan. All were in favor.

There was no new business to consider.

Chair Zlokovich heartily thanked Dr. Michael Cobb for his successful stewardship of the Senate during academic year 2007 and presented him with a plaque and gavel.

The motion to adjourn (Jackson/Fulgham) was recognized and approved at 3:30 p.m.

The next Faculty Senate Meeting will be August 29, 2007 in the University Center Missouriana Room at 3:00 PM.
