Community Health Worker
Continue to main contentCertified Community Health Workers (CHW) are non-licensed frontline public health workers who are trusted members of and/or have an unusually close understanding of the community.
Individuals may work in settings such as: outreach, patient navigation systems, peer counseling environments, promoters in community settings, health aids in schools, health advocate or health educations arenas. CHWs do not provide direct clinical care, except for blood pressure or glucose readings.
CHWs assist with:
- enrolling individuals into programs
- coordinating resources within the community for individuals,
- providing health intervention strategies
- developing training programs
- serving as a liaison between the community and organizations
The Southeast Missouri State University Partnership for Community Health Workers was awarded funding to increase the number of Certified CHW’s in Southeast Missouri serving the population. This partnership between Southeast Missouri State University and the Missouri Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Cancer and Chronic Disease Control works together to attract, train, and retain CHWs interested in serving Missouri’s population.
