Diversity Celebrations

  • Black History Month

    We at Southeast are proud to celebrate Black History Month. There are several activities presented in order to involve and perhaps educate our students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • MLK Dinner

    Each year, we commemorate and pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy with the MLK Dinner, featuring musical performances; an MLK Tribute video; presentations from University leaders and students; and, a compelling and distinguished keynote speaker.
  • Hispanic Heritage

    National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It’s a four-week on-campus celebration with speakers, activities, and opportunities to converse and learn.
  • Carpe Diem

    Southeast is the proud home of students, faculty, and staff from nearly 60 countries. Each year, we celebrate our international diversity with Carpe Diem, a celebration designed to showcase the people and the cultures of the countries represented here, and to give us all a better, more sophisticated understanding of the world around us.

Groups and Resources

  • Black Faculty and Staff Alliance

    The Black Faculty and Staff Alliance furthers the success and advancement of black faculty, staff and students through various initiatives on campus. The BFSA was started in the fall of 2016 and founded to provide a voice for the University's African-American faculty and staff.
  • LGBTQ+EA

    The LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance provides the opportunity for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer employees at Southeast to meet and connect with one another, as well as sponsor activities and programs that educate and inform, promote LGBTQ+ interests, and build unity among the community and their allies.
  • Religion and Faith

    Religious identity and faith development can be an important part of the Southeast experience, informing how you understand and engage with the world. Find opportunities to foster fellowship and nurture spiritual growth at one of the local churches or religious centers around Cape Girardeau.

Enrollment, Retention, and Academic Offerings (Fall 2022)

  • Undergraduate enrollment is 8,454 and graduate enrollment is 1,473.
  • Enrollment included 506 undergraduate transfer students.
  • The undergraduate student population is 60.1% female and 39.9% male.
  • The undergraduate student population includes 9.1% Black/African American, 3.4% Hispanic, and 4.2% students from other minority ethnic groups.
  • The five-year average bachelor degree seeking first time freshmen class size is 1,424 students.
  • The average ACT score is 21.25 and the average cumulative GPA is 3.59 for degree-seeking full-time freshmen.
  • The freshman-to-sophomore retention rate is 87%.
  • The average age of undergraduate students is 22.
  • The four-year graduation rate is 40.6% and six-year 56.5%.
  • Southeast offers more than 200 areas of study.
  • Over 1,580 courses are offered each semester.
  • More than 380 courses are offered online.
  • Southeast offers a wide variety of study-abroad options in more than 30 countries.
  • The student-to-faculty ratio is 20:1.

Campus Life and Athletics (Academic Year 2022)

  • 73% of the students are from Missouri.
  • Out-of-state students represent almost all 50 states, with the largest out-of-state representation being from Illinois.
  • There are 1,068 international students from 66 different countries studying at Southeast.
  • 66% of students are using University Career Services.
  • The residential student body is approximately 23%.
  • More than 18% of undergraduate students are active members of a student organization and more than 800 of these students are in a direct student leadership position or participating in a University leadership development program.
  • Students may choose from 18 residence halls and 8 dining locations.
  • There are more than 238 student organizations.
  • 14% of students are members of Greek social fraternities and sororities.
  • The Student Recreation Center and the Student Aquatic Center are available for students, faculty and staff.
  • More than 5,000 students participate in intramural sports or sports clubs.
  • Southeast competes in NCAA Division I, Ohio Valley Conference athletics. Southeast's mascot is Rowdy the Redhawk, and the campus colors are red and black.
  • Women's sports are basketball, cross country, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, track (indoor/outdoor), and volleyball. There are 149 female athletes.
  • Men's sports are baseball, basketball, cross country, football, and track (indoor/outdoor). There are 221 male athletes.
  • Approximately 450 students participated in dance, music, and theatre events and productions.
